    Cam lobe went bad. do I rebuild or not?

    So do I do a complete teardown or throw in a new cam and let the oil filter pick up any old particles? Money is not falling off trees to me. The engine has 4 hours ran on it. (see avatar) What procedure should I do. Because when it's in the engine bay, it ain't comin out. I was thinking of buying a cam so I need to know before I do buy one. thanks.

    I woudl flush out the engine possibly replace the oil pump , which cam went bad ?

    The guy I bought it from had a Mopar performance purple camshaft in it. it was a Hyd. He broke in the engine and then it had problems running. Thus, the cam was the problem. He said it ran for about 4 hours total on it then he shut it down and it hasn't been ran since. The engine has been kept in dry storage with our low humidity conditions for about 4 years. I recall that there was some superficial rust on the crank and rods when I inspected it when I bought it. I was wondering about that too. What do I flush it out with? And how? Engine degreaser spray can? Thanks CP.  :thumbsup:

    basically I would pull the pan & clean it out , most of the metal will be there or in the filter , only the oil pump is not protected by the filter , clean out the oil pump now  including the bypass valve  &  change oil a few times in the first 500 miles to wash most of the metal out into the filter & replace the oil pump after 500 miles or so , keep an eye on the oil pressure with the old oil pump

    :iagree: That's exactly what I did on a 440 that had a cam lobe go bad, it was fine afterwards for many hard runs.

    In addition, go to an auto parts store and see if you can find a magnetic drain plug. It will hold any tiny bits and keep them from recirculating between oil changes. I had to do that once, and you wouldn't believe how much it collected. Make sure you get one with a good strong magnet, as some of them are cheap, and not very powerful.

    I am running one of those also, it works well.

    If you're talking a Hemi, I would tear it down and clean it all out. 4 hours means it went everywhere. Oil is splashed on cylinder walls and the iron will score pistons and trash ring seal, thrust bearing surfaces get doused with it. Oil galleries (especially 90° drilled passages) get deposits of it. What goes thru the pump gets into everything. Never mind iron particles that are smaller than the oil filter media. Mere prescence of metal means it should be cleaned out. Especially if it's not in the car yet. Plus...Why did the cam go bad? Do you actually know, or was a new cam just installed? They dont go bad for no reason.

    Some good points heard. the previous owner said he had a rocker adjustment overtightened.

    I've had a couple cams not break in right and the lobes/lifters got messed up. Because I was there and knew it didn't run for too long, I cleaned the pan, checked the pump and the bearings by pulling some caps. All was okay. Since it sounds like you got this motor from somebody else who had this happen, I think I would go through it, especially if you already have it out. Who knows what else he did or didn't too. Its an expensive motor compared to what it would cost to have it checked. Minimum, I'd check the bearings and do everything all the others mentioned.

    I think then I will concur with a teardown then. It's an original 71 block and I have to do it right. No sense in taking a risk. it's never been bored out either.
