8 3/4 oil drain?
« on: January 14, 2007 - 05:41:08 PM »
Ok I don't want to sound like an idiot but how do you drain an 8 3/4 rear end? the TSM drawing shows a plug but mine is nice and clean and I can't find one. I tried a suction gun but I can't get the hose to go down in the hole. you don't crack it open do you? that looks like a good way to start a leak.

I've always put a pan underneath and cracked them open. Then I replace the seal, because of leaks and I am usually replacing the 3rd member (having a hard time deciding what gears I like, sso I have been swapping pumpkins a lot lately).

If you are not pulling the pumpkin you need a good quality suction gun, but you will never get all of it out.  A cheap gun won't work too well; the lube is usually too heavy.  The one time I did mine I used a heat gun on low to warm up the center section for 30 minutes, then most of the lube came out fairly easily.  When I have to do it again I'll pull the pumpkin.

The best way is to crack them open and then replace the seal.

I undo all of the 10 bolts holding the housing place & leave the to bolt in place but loose & use a Jack to lift the nose of the carrier to split the seal

I put a drain plug in the housing on my last one.  I'll do it again to this next one.  Just drill a hole at the bottom (opp. side of the ring gear)...and weld a nut to the inside of the housing (or outside if you prefer).
