I saw a strange tag today
« on: January 14, 2007 - 06:55:55 PM »
I went to look at a 71 Barracuda today that has been in the same family since new.  Sticking out from under the fender tag was a smaller square tag.  It had 2H 2H stamped in it.  The letters were a similar font as the fender tag's, but were slightly larger.  Also, there were two holes shaped like the letter P.  I've never seen this before.  Any ideas?  I've also posted about some interesting quirks on this car over on the interior board if you are interested.

It was an inspection tag. The inspectors could stamp or punch it with their marks on the assembly line.

Not all cars had them, but there were several different styles;

nice collection of those Barry. Definitely future museum articaft items there. I've seen a few of these before and never thought anything of it. Now I wished I had snagged em. pretty cool.

Looks like they used what ever they had lying around.  :dunno:

Not to hijack this thread but all the different color tags made me think...How did they paint the tags. Mine is painted on both sides. I read some place that one side of the tag was screwed down then bent up so some paint would get under it. After that it was simply screwed down.   :dunno:

You would think that it would have left a crease in the fender tag which mine doesn't have.

The fender tags were painted with one screw holding them on most of the time, but I have seen a few exceptions.

For most cars with one tag, one screw was used to hold the tag on with the tag bent up like you said so that it could get some paint under it.

Cars with two tags used the center screw through both tags.

Some have a very notable crease and some do not.

Yep, the one I saw today was shaped like the one in the middle of the pic, and the holes and stampings looked like the ones on the other tags.  Thanks for quickly solving my puzzle.

Ah that makes sense I looked at my tag again and it looks like it bent around the screw only, I was thinking it would be a clear crease from one side to the other.  :banghead:

Follow-up question -- are the fender tag screws painted?   What if a 2 tag car?

Thanks

Two tag cars had both tags held in by the center screw for painting, so the outer screws would not be body color.

Thanks Barry -- I assume the inspector tag is then attached to that center screw holding the two fender tags -- and is visible?
