Remove Steering Box
« on: January 16, 2007 - 11:31:40 AM »
:working:  I need to remove the sterring box, but the pin has been mashed down into the hole.  Need advice on how to remove the pin.  Also,  should I change to power steering or stay with manual?  I would like for my wife to be able to drive the car also.

Thanks
R/T

If yours is like mine, you just use a punch and tap it out.

I like my manual steering, but if your wife will drive it often, she might like the power better.

 :iagree:

Use a punch, it comes out easily. For some reason, a screw driver and hammer doesn't cut it.  :pullinghair:

yes use a punch, specific to the roll pin size rather than just a tapered punch.

mine did not come out easily, if I hadnt had the  motor out of the car, I wouldnt have gotten the pin out (not enough hammer swinging room).

good luck.

At the other end of that coupler is a small pin that stops the shaft and dogs and spring from coming out of the coupler. If you pry the cover clips back carefully, slide the cover and the rubber boot up the shaft , you will be able to press that pin out from the inside and then remove the shaft from the coupler. After you remove the steering box , you can then rework that springpin on the work bench where it will be easier to access. :2cents:

Go to Sears or someplace and get a punch kit with a varity 15 different punches/chisles for around $20 bucks (on sale). They will be well used thoughout your car  :2thumbs:

OK, a true confession of a shade tree mechanic. What I used for a punch was one of those "T" type valve cover hold down bolts. It fit perfectly(the threaded end).

I am in the middle of a power to manual conversion.

I have as far as the steering shaft off the power gear box.
I started to work on it and after have 60 degree days here its like 10 now, just my luck.

I noticed the pin taped out very easy.

Remeber if you change steering types they have different steering shafts.
Bought my Flaming River shaft from Summit last weekend - I love being able to drive there.
The new shaft also comes with directions for the old shaft removal and new shaft install.
The only complaint I have about it is they tell you with a LOT of "jargon" how to remove, but some pics would be nice.

Mike & BB73...........Thanks for your imput.  The steering box is coming out this weekend.  I should have worked on the car when it was in the 60's last weekend.  This weekend it's going to be in the low 30's.

Thanks,
Ragtop

Is your car a small block or bigblock? I have a smallblock in mine with manual steering and I don't think your wife would enjoy parking the car with the manual steering. If it is a big block she won't like driving it at all with manual steering. Personnally I like the manual over the power, but to each his own. Good luck.

Ok folks I tried the punch, smacked it hard like Chryco said and bent the punch.  I must be doing something wrong. :pullinghair:  Ok I did start to try Vpoints suggestion.  I removed the clips at the other end of the couplier and slid the boot up the shaft.  My question here is, do I take the steering shaft out? :clueless:  Then press the pin out from the inside.
