1999 Ram Truck

Dad has a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500.

When you start driving it does not want to upshift, even backing off of the gas does not help.

any suggestions

Could be a lot of things,governor pressure solenoid,governor pressure sensor,output sensor. You need to have a "scan tool" hooked up to it and check for codes and readings. Can you give any more information? (did it do this all of a sudden ,mileage, engine etc.)

 I adopted a 98 Dakota work truck w/130K miles on it that may have never had a service performed on it that did not want to catch third but two fluid changes later she worked like new. NOT directly related but we have had several 90's+ Chrysler FWD products & they are very sensitive to fluid change intervals as well as fluid type. One was a 93 Caravan that we had the fluid changed (Express Lube) & the shifting got worse, took it to the dealership & they put the correct fluid in & problems went away. Started taking all changes to the dealer & sometimes there is a software upgrade to be flashed to the computer.

Was waiting on Dad to answer my question....

The Trani shifts fine until it tries to shift from 2nd to 3rd.

It is as if it goes into outerspace at times...

I think it gets hung up between gears and he will have to let off the gas and go thru the shifting isse again.

It was recommended that it might be an Electronic/electrical issue...

I know the 93 Ram I had, had Elec over-drive, and I can not speak enough as to the piece of crap it was...but

Just got it ... its a 46-RE Trani.

If it only has the problem from 2nd to 3rd it is the lip seals in the direct (third gear) drum are shrunk up. Very common with the original from the factory internal seals. Only way to fix it right is to overhaul it.   The replacement seals in the overhaul kit will not shrink up.

My '99 has 85,000 miles on it , I am waiting for it to develop the same problem........it will some day.
