    I wonder what is the standard rearaxle on 1970 318 car?  :clueless:

    Here's what I found for 1970 on a Mopar tech site:

    Differential Options:
    • Low Performance models came standard with a 7.25 inch housing with either 2.76:1 or 3.23:1 ratio gearing. 
    • High Performance models came standard with a 8.75 inch housing with 2.76:1, 3.23 :1, 3.55:1, and 3.91:1 ratios, and an option of "SureGrip" limited slip. The 3.23 and 3.55 were the most common, with the 3.55:1 being standard in the T/A with an optional 3.91:1. 
    • Hemi models with a manual transmission came with a 9.75 inch Dana 60 "SureGrip" axle standard offering either 3.54:1 or 4.10:1 gearing, and in 440 and Hemi automatic models, this rear differential was optional, in place of the 8.75 housing.

    The 2 72 318 cars we have, both have original 8 3/4" open 2.76 rears...both are 'low performance' 2bbl 318s.  :2cents:

    I thought it was 8 3/4 open 3.23 on my SE, i dont know how to check it, i know the car is untouthed...

    Later model Barracudas and Challengers  all have the 8 3/4 rearends standard.
    (they all have the good disc brakes too)

    I have seen a few cars with 318s and 7 1/4s in E bodies. But that was not "standard " I dont believe. The 8 3/4 case was. Ratio depended on egnien, trans and "packages" ordered. So really, anything could have gotten in there...lol.

    The challenger was manual drum on all fours.  :icon16: now..well 13" baers.  :grinyes:

    i agree with moper, almost seems like the cars got whatever was around and there wasnt much standard from what ive seen either..

    Think my 73 has the 8-3/4...looks like it, though from conversations at time of purchase I had always wondered if he has put a ford rear-end in the car.

    He commented on having put a Detroit Locker and something about having gotten it out of a ford...problem was I could not quit nodding my head and looking at the car... I payed less attention than I should have at the time...pluss I was 20...oooo pretty car...

     :iagree:  What is standard for these cars?  You often don't see standard stuff. 

    How many times have you seen a 3 speed manual tranny in a '70 Challenger?  There are some but not many and that tranny was "standard" if you got the 225, 318, 340, and 383 engines (4 barrel).

    My 70 barracuda 318 car (Currently all original) has a 7 1/4 rear end. I know 72 and up all got 8 3/4 rears, not sure about 71, but in 1970 I know that the 7 1/4 was standard on the low performance cars. I have seen several unrestored 318 1970 cars all had 7 1/4 rear ends.

    My '71 Challenger 318-2V came with an 8-3/4" 741 (small pinion) 2.76 gearset.  4 wheel drums (10") also.

    My '71 came with the 7-1/4 (3.23) and it had the 318-2, 904, 4 wheel drums.

    our 74 has the 8-3/4 with 2.76 i guess it will hold up good to the 340 we have to put in it :dunno:
