New resto parts available that are absolutely awesome
« on: January 19, 2007 - 02:29:48 PM »
I just got my issue of MCG today and in it is a list of new resto parts available. Included in that list is 340 hipo exhaust manifolds and 426 hemi inline 2 four manifolds. The exhaust manifolds are from a company in Oregon and are 600. They have them in stock and will be at Mopars at the Strip. Their website is accurateltd.com The hemi manifold is like a thousand bucks, and has the original mopar casting numbers in it. Their website is aandatrans.com, I am soo excited for all of these new parts coming available. I can't wait to start on my 70 cuda clone project.

You can by a dual quad hemi intake from Mopar but have to use a different air cleaner as the carbs are farther apart, it is the Marine intake.

That's the one they've been selling (marine with Holley carbs). They announced the "correct" reproduction for Carter carbs some time last year and this looks like it. The estimated price at the time was near the same as a used original ($1000). The marine intake is definitely less than that.

And you can buy the High performance Stage V inline 2x4 for the same $ and have more power.  Tim Banning (among others) sells drop base air-cleaner bases for shaker and underhood setupps.

Yep, I have one because I got sick of looking for the "correct" stuff. I paid less than $500 I believe and two of the cheapy Holley 600s ($228 from Jeg's) work just fine. That's a whole bunch better than ~$3500 for a factory set up (unless you care about originality).

Eh, repro...... :puke: Who said they are good like your title states?  :dunno: Good to see these repros being made but if they are of rubbish quality (like most) they may as well not build them. Build them properly or not at all I say.

I'd rather have original restored pieces any day over new junk made in "USA/China".  :2cents:

I think that anyone who has purchased exhaust components from Accurate Ltd. would defend their quality (and accuracy). I haven't seen the 340 manifolds in person yet but I'd be surprised if *one* of their products is poor in relation to everything else they make. By all accounts, the Hemi intake mentioned has had some very promising reviews as well. A&A is another big name with a pretty good reputation. Perhaps it would be a good idea to actually look at, inspect, and compare the parts before jumping to conclusions? Just a thought...

I am a firm believer that if you're going to spend the time and effort into building a reproduction part then you should make the best part possible. Obviously not all companies agree with that approach but some do. Word of mouth and grass roots reviews will quickly weed out the lower quality junk from the better/higher quality pieces. Of course, then people can whine about the price of the good stuff while buying the garbage... :P

Just a thought lol........if 3-1/2 years of restoration on the Challenger and now the 'Cuda isn't comparing, inspecting or looking at, I don't know what is. I've tried a hell of a lot of places overseas, some 210+ 100% eBay feed-backs (from overseas is heaps) not too mention the 40+ orders from YO so I wouldn't have said it otherwise mate......These 2 or 3 new products maybe good but like yourself, I have not tried every available repro on the market. The stuff I have got (tonnes, no choice) was utter crap. Dimensions way off, crap finishes, wrong fits and overall just absolute pi$$ poor quality.....none of which went back on the car. There were some nice pieces to come from it but very few and far between.

You only quoted part of it. ;)

A lot of repro stuff is junk but I probably wouldn't use the phrase "like most" when discussing the two companies mentioned in the first post. I appreciate reading evaluations based on what someone has actually seen but also expect them to have an open mind about stuff they haven't. Too much to ask? Maybe. Unfortunately, years of less-than-perfect parts have made us all wary but I think the competition in the marketplace is working to change that. The Mopar certification process is helping as well - although not every certified part is all that great either. Bottom line, don't buy it if you don't like it. It would be nice if you didn't bash it before having all the details though. Again, just a suggestion.

"Don't buy it if you don't like it" If I need a part Troy, how do you suggest I try before I buy? You don't make sense I'm afraid mate. Unfortunately, it's obviously too late once the part is in my hands. I only quoted part of it as that's the part I am responding too......quotes are good like that. I agree with you on that part anyhow. It's obvious that if you build a repro part it should be of utmost quality - it's a given. Don't need to tell me about doing it once doing it right. Nothing on any of my cars or my lifestyle is purchased on cheaper prices along, buy the best, forget the rest.

You wouldn't, I would, use the phrase "like most", when the majority (most) of the items we purchased was udder crap I feel well entitled to make such a statement and like I said, wouldn't have said it otherwise. We built the car(s) from ground up so went through a lot of repro (and NOS) items. Door panels, tail lights, bezels, switches, body panels, dash pads, speaker grilles, moldings.....the list goes on. Obviously (like anyone) we haven't used them all but a fair amount and that's what I mean - like most.

So, if you've already determined that "most" repro parts are substandard then how do you plan on finishing the Cuda? Are you going to hand-fabricate the entire car or did you find a stash of perfect NOS parts? I realize it is much harder for you to try before you buy due to your location. My experience has been much different. I have only seriously regretted two purchases - one because I was cheap and one because there were no alternatives (until I learn to create sheet metal with my bare hands). I talk to manufacturers, vendors, restorers, "experts", and show judges to get their opinions and recommendations. I buy parts at shows where I can physically see and compare the parts and can return them if I need to. I know you can't do that. Heck most people living on the US coasts don't have that ability either. My experiences and opinions will be much different than other people's. I do agree with you on some of the vendors you've had problems with as I've met them in person and it changed my mind on buying their parts.

However, as I pointed out earlier, feedback and reviews by others is a great way to learn what fits and what doesn't without actually holding the part in your hand. Message boards and clubs are perfect for this. The vendors DO read this stuff. From a manufacturers perspective, if you buy the part and don't use it then they still sold a part. There's no incentive for them to make it better. We have to continually push them to raise the bar and I think the prices of these cars have finally helped accelerate that process. Many of the recent part releases are much, much better than even a couple of years ago. I'm sorry that you've had so many bad experiences and it sucks that there's still only a fraction of the parts available for these cars. It pays to reward the quality manufacturers and shun the bad ones. That was my initial point - they aren't all bad. I wouldn't say "most" but you would so it boils down to the English language and perspective.
