Its an L code meaning it came from the factory as 383 -2bbl.
If it were N code, it would have come from the factory as a HP383 4bbl, which has slightly (dont remember how much) more HP than the 383-2bbl..

That being said, I dont think the N code engine was available on challenger verts that year, as it was only available with the R/T challenger, and there were no R/T verts in '71.

It is true that no 1971 Challenger R/T convertibles were built.  Although Dodge did offer the N-code 383 as the largest cubic inch performance motor in the 1971 Challenger convertible.

I would have to say that the numbers matching car would be worth more. How much is another thing. I would guess it would be worth about $10,000 more with it's matching numbers. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for posting the fender tag.  WOnder why they painted the purple car FC& since it was originally a Hemi Orange car esp. if it's numbers matching?  Seems like it'd be better to keep a rare factory big block car as cose to original as possible...

From what I can see around the tag it looks like paint on paint without primer in between coats.  For awhile everyone painted the ebodys purple.  It would be nice in the Hemi Orange but looks like it is too nice to change.

Im pretty sure its like 275 to 325 or something.  I think it was close to 50 hp difference.

If you are talking about the Purple car, I believe the Fender Tag decodes as FC7 Plum Crazy with V3W White Top and H6XW White Interior.  Also, maybe someone can also verify it but I believe the V7W code is the 71 Non R/T Dual Side Stripe.

i'd take the factory big block car......good colors from the factory, and love the current color combo

71 383 2 bbl rated 275 HP in 1971...the 383 4 bbl was rated 300 HP

V7W is a white longitudnal stripe.

Cowboy - I just realized the 383 car is local to me.  I've seen it at a number of car shows - VERY NICE.  I didn't really crawl all over it but I do remember it as being a nice looking car

Sorry, I'm a bit biased, but I like 1970 models.  Less rare, but more desirable iMHO.

Grille, taillights, stitched dash.

Other than the poorly applied rear bumblebee stripe, this car looks awesome (factory power windows/AC a big plus, not to mention factory big block AND FC7)!!!

Not sure what the reserve is:

But for a 1971, this one looks great too (factory 340 and four-speed!!!!):
