shifter and linkage installation?
« on: January 20, 2007 - 06:40:21 PM »
I worked on my cuda again today.  I did not remove the old shifter that was in it, so when I crawled under it, I had nothing to go by.  A bare transmission was where I started.  So, I started the installation with the mounting plate that Brewer's Performance sells, then the shifter.  After doing this, I put in the reverse linkage, and then I tried to figure out how the rest of the linkage goes, and how it attaches to the shifter and the gear selector plates for the transmission.  I have a few pictures of how I think that it went.  I have the reverse rod closest to the transmission, then the 1-2 rod, then the 3-4 rod.  I'm guessing the 1-2 rod is the longer one and the 3-4 rod is the shorter one. ???  I have the straight gear selector plate on the front of the transmission, and the bent one is in the middle with the bend facing the trans tunnel.  My the adjustment nuts on the linkage were too big for the gear selector plates that Brewer's gave me.  I was lucky that I found a machine shop that was open that enlarged the holes for me.  I tried drilling them out with two different bits but the steel was so hard it burnt the bits up.   If anyone has up close detailed pictures of their car's shift linkage, please post them up.  I have ran out of time when I was working on it and couldn't get the clips in the 1-2 and 3-4 rods where they attach to the transmission, so I wasn't able to test it out.

I am having the same problems, but with a A833OD
I aslo have a post going at the same time
I know that the 1/2 rod is shorter then the 3/4 rod.

You said you had to drill out the gear selector plate for the adjustment nuts.
I am not sure, but don't the adjustment nuts attach to the shifter? I coudl be wrong!! :banghead:

Check out my picture's on the pevisos post A833OD shift rods

I said the nuts/swivels that attach to the plates mounted on the studs on the transmission.  The holes in plates that mount on the studs on the tranny were too small for the end of the nut/swivel to go through it.  The nut/swivel is held in place on the other side with a dog leg type clip.  Thats what I was talking about.  I didn't enlarge the holes in the actual shifter.  These are the ones I was referring too.  Do the threaded rod ends on the 1-2 and 3-4 go into the shifter mechanism and the push in type ends go in the gear selector tabs??? ???  I just thought about that and I'm guessing that I shouldn't have had those holes enlarged...... :pullinghair: I wonder if I use these shifter bushings below that they will take up the space I created by enlarging the holes.

One more question....  Where is the neutral position for the shifter levers?  straight up?

I do not have a manual tranny but it seems logical that shifter straight up would be the neutral position.

adjusters always go to the rear on the shifter Except the reverse rod ,the bushings May fill the holes
the levers will not usually sit straight up whne in neutral , they usually tip a little off angle
