seeing the prices rising on 72 and up e bodies
« on: January 20, 2007 - 09:47:27 PM »
Makes me wonder if they are getting to be worth more then the 70/71's

I thought my 70 barracuda 440-6 car was only worth 20 or so, but now I see these 72's are going for over that :clueless:

here's my 70 im around 5k shy of being finished. This was a california desert rust free car when I started. I got to build the middle carb tomorrow, then it's ready to install the drive train. Original color too.  Seems my car should be atleast the same value as a 72. Or should I just drag one of my 72's out and start fixin it up. Sooner or later I will let some cars go. My car is further along now then these 2 pics. The grill is done and wireing, seat covers and rims I order on monday :2thumbs: I would of been done if I wouldn't of just spent 10k for my new shop

They'll never be worth more than the 70/71's. What's happening is pretty standard. The 70/71's are the "most desireable", so they have risen in price the fastest, and are now at rediculous levels far above what the average guy can afford. However, people still want Cuda's and Challengers, so they're turning to the "less desireable" 72-74 models, causing them to go up in value as well.

:iagree:  Yup, these prices for the "lowly"  :smilielol: '72-'74 Challengers are goin' up!

It's the, "If I can't have one of those, I'll take one of these instead." attitudes.

Sort like how the '68 and up vettes are getting more pricey as the early/mid 60's vettes are too pricey.

Your 70 barracuda 440-6 is worth more than a '72.  If you don't think so, I've got a '72 Challenger Rallye 340 I'll swap ya!

I'm kind of a plymouth e body guy, but I built an all black 74 bb challenger to go up and down the street in. :2thumbs: 10 minutes ago, I just ordered all the paint gasket kit for my barracuda, tommorow I hope to order 15x7 and 15x8 rallyes for it and all the seat covers and carpet too. This will keep me busy for a little longer....

This is my bb challenger project. It's further along now, and waiting on the paint. I've already paid for the paint and body work up front. I'm buying a new hood for it. A friend talked me out of putting my 1028hp bb in there today. He said even if I tie the frames, the car will distort so bad it will never be the same, so I will just make it an 11 or 12 sec street car and have fun cruisin in it. Or I can start building another one if a unlucky member is having a hard time trying to find a good project to start on. This is a good start here with 100 miles on it. Needs no trunk, no floors or frames or fenders or nothing but a bazzillion hrs of cleaning, detailing and tlc. I put a new front end in it last month and a reverse manual. It has under 50k original miles on it total. Not a perfect car, but will be sooner or later. I was gonna drive this to Atlanta when the members have something going on there one weekend when I am free from my job :2thumbs:

Check out Autorust Technicians. I think their site is www.autorusters.com. They make frame rail caps/replacements. They started out long ago making these caps to reinforce Mopar frame rails for high horsepower applications because the Unibody just can't handle as much horsepower as full frame cars can. They go up from underneath the car, and are welded/tacked into place. They're supposed to be great for fixing rusted frame rails, because they go right over top the damaged ones without having to cut everything out. They also do rust removal/restoration work. I've talked to them a few times, and they seem like a good bunch of guys, and the prices for their stuff is pretty reasonable. It might be worth a call if you're set on stuffing that monster motor into your Challenger.

yeah, I don't really want to weld anything to this car. There's no rust underneath it, so I wanna try to keep it as close to normal as possible. Even tho I was talked out of it, I may put bolt ins and still put my engine in. I got the leaf spring set up and now have the engine plates too. But I'm workin on the 70 barracuda this week and planning on having the 6 pk in it in a day or two. Thanks for the advice :2thumbs:

It's interesting but does anyone else notice that NADAs values are higher than other old car value charts?  There are old collector car values guides and NADA seems much higher.

Is that what the registry uses to assess the value of your car when you title it?

NADA allows you to put in options that didn't exist.  For example, I can see these printouts for my 74 Barracuda with a 440.  Is that how they mean it?  I'm sure it does raise the value, when it had a 318 before, but does anybody know, is that intended?  For example:

Muscle Car
1974 Plymouth Barracuda 2 Door Hardtop

Original MSRP: $3,067
Low Retail       Average Retail         High Retail
Base Price
                 $7,350              $15,200              $29,300
Options

440/275 HP 4bbl V8 Engine 20%
TOTAL PRICE
                 $8,820              $18,240*            $35,160

Did you look at the NADA difference between Barracudas and Cudas?    For '71 Cudas are about twice the price, which doesn't make sense to me.
