another trunk floor replacement question........
« on: January 22, 2007 - 12:02:20 PM »
Since mine was nearly gone, I can't tell if there is supposed to be a support bracket in the middle section. I did buy the new tank brackets that hold the ends of the straps (any tips on where to weld them on the bottom of the trunk floor GREATLY APPRECIATED)along with a TWO PIECE trunk floor. It may be OK with no additional support, but it appears to be about a 3.5 foot spread, which seems a bit much for the gauge of the floor.

Thanks, George in tallahassee

Nope, no support in the middle, if you have the two piece, once its all welded in, it will be much stronger.

Yeah, they are pretty strong once installed.  The b-bodies has a brace that runs side to side, but e-bodies have the two front to back.  I guess if you put enough pressure it may flex some, but not that much.

I was just about to ask that question after seeing a 69 Chargers rusted trunk that showed a brace running up the middle. Still very glad to know that I dont need anything else! George in Tallahassee

As far as where to weld the tank braces on: measure the distance between the grooves on the tank where the straps go from center to center (of the grooves).  The brackets are going to be welded on the floor with the same center-to-center spacing. If you're using the two piece floor, put them together upside down on the floor, mark the center, and then measure to each side half of the distance you measured between the tank groove centers. I think the grooves are 10" apart on center, so the braces are welded on 5" from the floor centerline to center of the brace on each side.  Obviously the front of the brace wraps around the bend in the floor (the curve didn't quite fit on the two we did). Good luck.
