Who's Driven A RHD Vehicle?
« on: January 25, 2007 - 10:30:14 AM »

Just curious, most will over look the fact that for the members overseas (Down under & England etc) we're not use to driving LHD, so it's a common question we get asked: "Is it hard driving a LHD?" "Cool! LHD" etc etc. Anyhow, just wondering if anyone here has driven a Right Hand Drive vehicle before? Hard for you? Weird? What car?

I just got thinking about it as when $$$ allow the 'Cuda will be a 5-Speed so I was just thinking to myself, "Wonder what it will be like shifting with my right hand?" Will be weird for sure. LHD is fun for me, a little weird at first but it doesn't take long at all. Over taking on the open roads can become a bugger, you need to pull quite a way over to see if the road is clear, so in reality, even checking to see if the road is clear can be dangerous. lol Na, not really.

You can give me all you like about the "wrong" side of the road, and the LH way is the right way....
Heard it all before......makes me laugh.  :smokin:

Cheers,
Carl

I say that where the cars are born that that is the way to drive.  In this case, the U - S of A.  Suck it up NZ, driving on the left of the car, right of the road, is the right way.       :burnout: :cooldancing:

Oh, and no, I havent driven a RHD.

No, I never have.  The only folks that do that here are the mail carriers. Every once in a while you'll see a RHD car at a car show...but very rare.

I bet it would take some getting used to! Blondes really shouldn't try this!

It's fine - coming from the UK, all of us with Yankee motors had to learn to drive lhd after driving rhd. You'll probably find that you grab the door armrest a few times instead of the shifter, but after a few tries you'll be able to swap between the two without thinking.

Two things I did find were worse:

1) Sharp left-hand turns where there is a wall or a hedge can be difficult as you can't see whats around the corner

2) Overtaking big trucks on the highway in the wet - their spray ends up over your side of the windshield.

My everyday car was rhd and the 'cuda was lhd; as soon as you get in each car you automatically adapt.

I had a kind of reverse problem. I was a dedicated streetbike rider till I went to the States so all my car driving experiences were in the Challenger. So it felt weird to me when I came back home to sit in cars on the right side. It's been so long since I've driven the Dodge I hope I remember how! :clueless:

I have never driven a RHD vehicle, but my father has driven "Down Under" and in Austria.  He said that it took a little to get use to, but he never had a problem with it.

I've never driven a RHD car, but I rode in a few when I was in India. Definitely takes some getting used to just seeing it. Then again, everything in India takes some getting used to.

I have not yet had the pleasure of driving a rhd vehicle, but one day I would like to own one whether it be a newer skyline or a subaru wr1. I want to see the look on peoples faces while I'm sitting in the "wrong" side of the car, and to see those ricers bowing down to my imported haul a$$ import.

:lol2: Funny stuff guys. Thanks Rich, I have no worries driving left or right hand. Took me about 2-3 days to fully get use to driving and getting to know where I was on the road. You can still spot some messy driving on the road with people who own LHD cars. They sit miles to the left, makes the car/style look ugly hugging the median barrier/line. I sit smack in the middle, as if it were a RHD vehicle.  :) One of the reasons is because it looks messy, but I have OCD that wont help. lol

On of the funniest things I have seen when it comes to LH & RH drive cars is someone asking if the pedals were the same set up LMAO. Imagine if RHD cars had (from left to right as you sit) Gas, Brake, Clutch.  :1zhelp:
Yupe, I have seen those Jeeps on eBay for mail runs etc....I often look for them in case I see a really cheap bargain, I can import if for bugger all and not have to convert it to RHD, my problem was, most would have been thrashed.
