Ok here's the deal, I got a 72 Challenger with a low compression cast crank 340 with the usual bolt ons, headers, intake, carb, cam, that could use a rebuild and some higher compression pistons, better heads etc. It also has a brand new rebuilt 904 tranny.
I really good friend of mine just snagged a 69 roadrunner and also bought a 440 and 727 from the same guy.
Well after looking at all the parts he had in his shop he decided he really didn't need the 440 and 727 trans, so he said he would sell it to me for just what he paid for it which was $1000.00 including headers.
I'm still trying to get more info, but it's the same motor that back when I was in high school ran solid 12's in a 70 Cuda.
I won't be able to see it for a few weeks, but It's a complete newer 440 maybe mid 70's? but it's supposed to have a forged crank, hot cam, torker intake, holley carb, mopar distributor, probably ported heads etc. And it's supposed to run as is. The 727 tranny is supposed to be rebuilt but never run. How long it sat I don't know.
My buddy is going to run it in the Roadrunner once he fixes a few things so I can see how it runs, before I buy it. I may ring and bearing it just to freshen it up.
It comes with headers and I happen to have a brand new radiator for a big block sitting in my shed. If the tranny is rebuilt or even if it just needs some new seals that would be fine, I also have alternator brackets.
So what else would I need besides power steering mounts, bigger torsion bars, a 727 drive shaft, and motor mounts?
And the main question is if all turns out ok, would you go for it, or just spend the money on the 340.
This is going to be a street/strip car.
