What would you do?
« on: January 28, 2007 - 09:39:17 PM »
Ok here's the deal, I got a 72 Challenger with a low compression cast crank 340 with the usual bolt ons, headers, intake, carb, cam, that could use a rebuild and some higher compression pistons, better heads etc. It also has a brand new rebuilt 904 tranny.

I really good friend of mine just snagged a 69 roadrunner and also bought a 440 and 727 from the same guy.
Well after looking at all the parts he had in his shop he decided he really didn't need the 440 and 727 trans, so he said he would sell it to me for just what he paid for it which was $1000.00 including headers.
I'm still trying to get more info, but it's the same motor that back when I was in high school ran solid 12's in a 70 Cuda.
I won't be able to see it for a few weeks, but It's a complete newer 440 maybe mid 70's? but it's supposed to have a forged crank, hot cam, torker intake, holley carb, mopar distributor, probably ported heads etc. And it's supposed to run as is. The 727 tranny is supposed to be rebuilt but never run. How long it sat I don't know.
My buddy is going to run it in the Roadrunner once he fixes a few things so I can see how it runs, before I buy it. I may ring and bearing it just to freshen it up.
It comes with headers and I happen to have a brand new radiator for a big block sitting in my shed. If the tranny is rebuilt or even if it just needs some new seals that would be fine, I also have alternator brackets.

So what else would I need besides power steering mounts, bigger torsion bars, a 727 drive shaft, and motor mounts?

And the main question is if all turns out ok, would you go for it, or just spend the money on the 340.
This is going to be a street/strip car.

no brainer especially if the 440 actually doesn`t need rebuilding, you will spend far more on the 340 & end up with less , throw the 340 in the corner & slide the big block in

That is exactly what I am thinking, once I add up heads, pistons, machine work etc for the 340, I just see it costing alot more and getting less bang for my buck.
Oh yea and a 12 second time slip would be ok too.

Go for the 440!  Also if your going to do street/strip duty with the car, I'm not sure how well the 904 would hold up.    440 would be much more fun!

Yea, at least until I can save enough to buy a work truck in another year or so.
I know I'm a glutton for punishment  , that's why I was curious about the gas mileage everyone was getting.

Yea, when I had just a 70 Challenger with a warmed over 383 it seemed like the gas gauge just moved towards empty as soon as I started it, I know it did everytime I floored it!  Of course I did have 3.91 gears and a holley double pumper, so I'm sure that helped empty the tank even faster.

Glad to hear you got your car running good, bet it feels alot better now.

Doing great, best move I ever did, but between work, school, homework, yardwork, and the wife and kids I'm spread VERY thin.
It's going to pay off soon though, so it's all worth it.
I got a big midterm this Tuesday so I'll be studying most of the weekend, except of course when I come on here to take a break.

I don't have any emblems on the car, but if the deal goes through, maybe I'll go buy some 340 ones.  :bananasmi

When I changed my challenger from a 340 to a 440, I was told I would need to change torsion bars, but I didnt and It dropped the front end about 3/4 of an inch, I dont think it effected it that much, just a little more flex, when you nail it. No problems so far, John

Hopefully if I get the motor, I'll swap out the T bars before the motor goes in, but that's good to know just in case I run out of money.
