My '68 Roar Runner is a 383 and 4sp. The combo works nice and makes good power as well as milage. I have NO plans on changing it either. :2thumbs: :2thumbs:

I like the 383 too. What really irksme, is that a car with a 440 in it command so much more money than one with a 383 in it. That's what shortchanges the 383.

i know the 6 pak is something special but dont you think that the 440 4v and 383 4v should be closer in $$ :iagree:

I was shocked when that '70 Road Runner with a 383 went through BJ on the first night I think at 71k. It was a huge amount for a base RR I thought. From what I rember it was a bench and auto with AC.

:iagree: the first 361 that i drove was my buddies 66 charger. what a sweet ride. that was one sweet motor even though it was tired with many miles. then he went to a 440+6  :walkaway: oh well, such is the story of the under apreciated 3** mopar big blocks.

I love the 383 too. But I have never had/driven a 440 or hemi. But I have driven a 340 (72 Challenger Rallye). It really reved the rpm's and was really fast. But not 383 fast  :ylsuper:
I have smoked a 68 Charger R/T with a 440 with my 'Cuda 383 HP.
And I smoked a 71 Charger R/T with a 70 Charger 500 383CID (aftermarket intake/headers/Carb/pistons/balanced) I had.

My first '70 Challenger RT I had in the early '80's had a 383, not built up or anything, and I remember that  engine would  get that car moving real  quick. Nice reliable motor too as I recall, and a lot of fun :grinno:

 love the stories. i dont race mine all that often and have never had the opportunity to race against a mopar, but the GMs out there and the tuners that i have raced get smaller in the rear view every time.  :burnout:  the only mopar i ever raced against was a 69 340 dart that was stock and i beat it by a bumper. i had a built 302 in my little comet. took a built ford to beat a stock dart. pretty pathetic. just think what my 383 would have done. what have you all done to your 383s to make them a bit quicker?

I love them too,I think people underestimate the 383.My 70 GC and 69 bee and both 383hp numbers cars.If you look at ferd and cheby,no one seems to care if they didnt get a big block,a 350 is totally acceptable.Ma mopar did put big blocks in more cars than anyone else so people expect a hemi under the hood, even though a 340,383,440,426h are all respectable high performance motors.I have had several 440hp B bodies, love the motor, would i rather plop in a 440 instead of keeping my numbers 383's?,not a chance,I can build a 383 anyday of the week that will spank a stock/lightly built 440hp.The sky's the limit when building a motor, heck i remember reading an acticle in a mopar mag with a guy and his duster  and a /6 running a 9 second 1/4.IN my book a BB is a BB,no one would complain if they had a cheby with a 396,a 383 is a better motor to me.

My '70 is a 383 L code Barracuda, non gran coupe. I liked it as a 383. The next step in evolution is a 426 Hemi tho. I've always wanted a Hemi in a Cuda. But, as far as the most fun car I've ever owned...It was a '71 Newport 4dr, witha  383. I'm looking for a replacement for that exact car. I cammed and geared it, and added 175ho NOS system. It even beat a Buick T Type on the highway with 6 guys in it. Those GNs would shut off at 125mph, and I walked away..lol. 383s are no slouch, but if you are really into going faster (speed is addictive) then when you drive a 440 you will say the 383 "was good, but...". I never believed that was true when it was told to me. But over the years, I cant agreee more. Of course, when yo udrive a 528, you think the 440 "was good..."

I dont dispute the power provided by the 440 or 427 or 528, but i just get bummed when in the great engine line up the 383 is commonly tossed aside and sneared at. i love my tire roasting 383 and wouldnt change it. if i had a rolling shell with no eng or trans, then maybe i would go bigger but i think that the 383 has some huge advantages that the 440 and 426 dont, rev capabilities just to name one.
