I seem to recall similar words about the new Chargers.  And now I see quite a few of those on the road.

Very true.  I like the new Chargers.  For what they are, they are a decent car.  Would be nice if they were a bit cheaper in the $$$ department.

Do you tell them how to do the surgery?  My point still stands.  Let the people who know how to design cars, design the cars.

boy this is something...

I dont think anyone told them how to design it either...just what they would like to see.  an end result...
the design process and final result are two different things...

I guess time will tell if its a good design or not. Maybe he didn't have much of a choice what the grill looked like  :dunno:

There are still alot a good points about the car.  :grinyes:

Anyone remember the old Charger concept from around (2001?) didn't look anything like the production car.

I'm Still here, and still listening. Great comments. No I am not insulted, nor am I pissed. I have been down this road before.

I worked in the Jeep Design studio for 5 years. Talk about a hard sell....

Keep 'em coming. My point is that design is subjective, and you can't please everyone. I'll post more later.

I think the big diifference, is that in the muscle car days, cars were designed to be different. A Charger grill didn't look like a Cuda grill, didn't look like a Challenger grill, didn't look like a truck grill, etc, etc, etc. Hell, most of the time they changed from year to year on the same model. The car designers have to get away from this brand identification thing, where certain design aspects are carried through to every single vehicle for year after year after year. Maybe they don't have much of a choice, because it's a rule handed down from above, but if that's the case, then new and innovative people are needed at the top. Where are the Carroll Shelbys, and Zora Duntovs of today? The guys that were in love with automobiles, and their performance and design? There are none. They've been replaced by a bunch of Harvard yuppie business majors, and that's why all the vehicles look the same.

I would not be so sure of that....

All of us are passionate people. We all love what we do. We love cars- It is our hobby and our lifework. It would be an understatement to say that we love cars. We  Live 'em, eat 'em, breath 'em, sleep 'em. Most of us have a "project car" or a race car, or a show car, or motorcycle. We are all into making better products for consumers.

What you are missing to the equation is that marketing, product planning, engineering, procurement and the financial group have some veto power to counter & support what design office does. It's a huge chain, and as I said before, you can't make everyone happy.

I didn't mean to get into a design disertation.

What you need to realize is that what WE want, isn't gonna be the same as what most of America wants.  For example, the Trans Am was a modern muscle car.  It was a beautiful, badassed looking car, that performed better than the Mustang GT.  However, the Trans Am, and even the base model Firebird, were canned, because they weren't selling enough.  Hell, the Mustang outsold the Firebird and Camaro lines COMBINED in their final years of production.

And when you look at the Mustang, the vast majority of Mustangs sold, are not the GT models, but the base model V-6s.

If you make a modern, no-frills, stripped down performance car (ala 68 Roadrunner), ALMOST NOBODY WILL BUY IT, because today's people are spoiled.  People want their electric 6 way seats, their air conditioning, their navigation systems, their in dash 6 CD player.  The Viper was an exception to this, but that's because the Viper is America's "Super"car, marketed to the Ferrari-buying crowd.

The type of car that sold well 40 years ago is not going to sell well today, because 40 years have passed, and the wants of the average car buying consumer have changed.  Buyers now look at gas milage, at safety, at how much it can haul, rather than at how fast it goes, or how big the engine is.

That car looks so much like every other car on the road (including the last generation 300) that I on't see anything special about it.

I think they're a lot of car for the money.  the base model is about the same price as the Chevy Malibu and Ford 500.  Which would you rather have?

You're 1000% correct about that.  I see too many people on this board that are upset that the new Charger has 4 doors instead of being glad that Dodge once again has such a popular RWD performance car and is king of the hill again.  They're not going to re-issue the '68 Charger, but we can respect that they have come out with today's equivalent.  Now the other automakers are scrambling to play catch-p to Chrysler - see all the RWD cars at this year's auto show?
