My 73 Challenger has the rear seats out of a 73 Cuda. The question I have is are Cuda, and Challenger seats the same, and interchangeable? The seat back looks like it sticks up like 3/4 to 1" above the package tray. This would be ok, but the area that is above the package tray is like a white cloth material rather than the black vinyl. Any ideas?

Sounds like the back of your rear seat is not mounted properly. I would pull the bottom out and look at it. There are 2 hooks at the top the seat slides down on. The seat top needs to be pushed down and be fully latched on these. If it will not go down look at the 2 loops that come out of the seat back at the bottom. These may not be in the right place. There are bolts that hold them in place. If the bolts were left in the brackets the seat will not go down. The seat should go down and be bolted in place. It is kinda hard for me to explain. If you need pics to understand what I am trying to say, let me know and I'll take a couple for you. Do you know what year your seats are? If not post a pic.

Interesting read. The seat is bolted? How? I have no bolts, just "clips" in and that's it. I also think it's to high, as the look from the rear window is not fine.

It may be different in different years , the seat back has 2 loops at the bottom in 70-71 they are bolted in but I do recall fold over tabs to lock the seat back in but I cannot remember if it was a different year or body style

The two hooks that the trunk divider hooks on also hold the seat back in place. Make sure the seat back is pushed down all the way on those hooks. There are also two loops of metal that hang down below the seat back. There are bolts that go through those loops and into brackets that are welded to the floor pan.

I know, 2 upper loops and 2 longer loops down the seat. Did a complete resto of the back seat last year. Here are the welded brackets on the floor pan, (1st day when I got the car). There are holes in the brackets, I will try to use some bolts there...

I had the same issue on my 70 challenger, turns out I was installing the two looped ends on the back seat inside that bracket inside of against the bracket.
(then two bolts secure it in place)
Perhaps this is your issue too.......?

Up again, just installing the seats again after repainting the trunk.

For sure the two lower loops go inside that bracket, otherwise there wouldn't sit right/wrong. Today I looked and I can put screws in the any of the 3 lower holes. Maybe gives a little extra security in case of an accident (holds the rear seat in place).

BUT. I still have that ~1 inch area shown from the package tray, that I think should be hidden. I looked again on the brackets and the seat (the loops) are sitting as low as they can. For that means the brackets are a little to high, so that the rear seat cannot slip deeper. Didn't double check the upper brackets...

@publicbottle For me it makes no sense to put the lower loops outside/on top of the brackets. Is this what you have been done? Maybe this is the solution whith huge washers and a little screw.

Question for me: What was stock?

The loops DO NOT go inside that bracket. They just go on the outside of it. One screw with a washer on it per side is all it takes.

Thanks, peeps. I would have never ever thought, that it doesn't go inside. It was like that when I've got the car. So you think, this is right. OK, I will go outside the brackets and use screws and washers that where at least installed in the factory.

Thanks again, maybe someone can change the thread title to reflect the infos here.

Edit: Everything said right from the beginning of the thread, but without pics. I ever thought, just the screw in a hole when the loop is in place inside the bracket and this fixes the loop, so that it cannot slip up. Looking forward to do it right.

Yehaaa. The seat goes in place like it should. THAAAAANKS again. Even the part between the 2 seat parts goes together now. Before I could see the the body through the gap that was between the seats. Totally satisfied now.

Not at all the subject I expected..... Looking back it's amazing what a 20 year old kid can do in the back seat of a 70 Challenger.... It hurts to even think about getting back there these days...
