Rack and pinion
« on: February 16, 2007 - 01:27:55 PM »
Not sure if this is the right area to put it in, if not let me know and I will move it, but are there any kits or any way to get rack and pinion steering in a '70 Cuda? I heard through a few of my dads friends that it may require modifications to the frame, any truth to that?

there are a few types availble , probably the best is the Alter-K-Tion ,most replace or modify the K frame & if they incorperate coilover front shocks will require frame re-inforcement with the exception of the Alter-K-Tion    , the majority are front steer types which require a different spindle , rear steer types can use the factory spindle

Unisteer makes a rack and pinion kit for e-bodies that is "supposed" to bolt in with out modifying the k-frame. I'm considering it for my 70' as well.

I've heard the Unisteer system is kind of pricey at $1500-1800 and may cause some bump steer problems. Never looked at it myself though. One of the biggest problems with a rack set up is oil pan interference and locating the rack without cutting into and requiring a different oil pan.

You can get great improvements with a Firm Feel unit, but you still have to deal with the weight.

I would not do the Unisteer system until you have heard LOTS of reports from folks that it works well.

The ALter-kation has been proven over and over of working in street applications; not just on the 1/4 track.
