73 Side Mirror Mounting
« on: February 19, 2007 - 03:51:53 PM »
Does anyone know how the Mounting Nuts come out of the door for the side mirrors of a 73 Cuda?  :dunno:  Mine are free-spinning in the door and therefore I can't get my mirror tight.  I ordered some new ones from Year One but I don't know how the old ones come out.   :clueless:

Any idea?

Thanks!
Bob

Sounds like the hole where your retaining nut is was drilled too big. :dunno: You have to knock them out from inside the door. But I don't think your new ones are gonna work if the ones now are spinning.

Well they're original so I don't know if it's just age or what, but my driver's side is fine, the passenger side is wobbly.  I took it off and tried to thread the screw and you can see it just spinning inside the door.  I didn't know if they were supposed to be tacked in with a small bead or if it wsa anything else.

CP is correct and they are also referred t as a RivNut. they come in steel or aluminum but I recommend the steel ones. They take more abuse when installing them. Be careful not to make the holes, that the original nuts were removed from, too big as the new ones will only squeeze up so far. If you are near an airport go see some flyboys as anyone there who builds or repairs planes should have the special installing pop rivet type tool CP mentioned. For a small amount of beer they may lend it to you.

I bought a thread setter kit from NAPA, it runs about $100 and comes with the tool and all the inserts.

when you say "Get new ones installed", do you not recommend me doing it or does it require some special tools that I don't have or is it too difficult?

Grainger has the set, comes with the tool & an assortment of nuts & setting heads, I think they called it nutsert?  other tool co's probably have it too, at grainger it was bouit 76 2 years ago. Rich.
