Wanted: 1970 Challenger Rear Valence Pictures

  Could someone post original pics of the back (mounting side) of a 1970 Challenger Dual Exhaust rear valence? Specifically i'm looking to see what differences there are or if the mounting/attaching brackets are the same from 70-74 :dunno: :clueless: Btw the reproduction valence going on my car is from Sherman's.

I bought mine from sherman as well, as far as I can tell someone told me a while back the only difference is that 70 ones had an extra bracket that isn't used other years.  Sorry, im just as much in the dark as you :lol:

That's what i've heard. Also i've heard that the brackets on a 70 are shorter than later years :dunno:

not sure on the support bracket , virtually everything changed for 71
you do need to remove the inverted V for the licence plate though , it move the plate too far back on the 70-72 cars

The Sherman reproduction pan is a 71- 74 style.  The only thing you will need to do to mount it on a 70 is to drill a hole in the car to mount the center bracket.  Everything else is the same.  If you have the small 70 brackets on the car you will need to remove them.  As Chryco said if you have the V shaped tag extension bracket you would need to remove it.  The extension bracket was for 73 & 74 cars to move the tag out to line back up with the licence plate light on the bottom of the bumper.  I used to have pics of the differences.  I'll get some more and keep them on my computer from now on.

The 1970 Challenger rear valance pan used 6 separate brackets to mount it. It mounted on the sides to the quarter panels at the same points all Challenger rear valance panels do.  Under the bumper brackets two small brackets were used on many, but not all, 70 Challengers.  They mounted to the top edge of the pan.  Toward the center, on the back of either side of the license tag location two other long brackets were used. The 71 through 74 Challenger rear pan used a center mounting bracket only.  In 1973  rear bumpers were moved out from the body to comply with Government impact regulations.  When this was done the license tag light in the bumper no longer shined on the license tag.  An extension was added to the rear valance to move the tag back into alignment with the tag light.

Would there be a difference in the brackets on a 1970 dual exhaust valence as compared to a 1970 valence without the cutouts?

They are the same brackets.

You're welcome.  Glad I could help.  If you are not going for an all out restoration the reproduction 71 up style pan will look fine.  All the differences are hidden.  The tall center bracket is hidden by the tag. The small brackets hide behind the pan.  It is much easier to work with the newer style pan.  Less pieces and less work are the reasons why Chrysler changed it.

  The rear valence purchased is the Sherman's piece for 70-74 Challengers. The shop doing the work is using it for test fitting so that there is no gap at the quarters. When things fit right, it will be removed in order to finish the rest of the bodywork. My original front valence (and it's hard to find trim) was unfortunately mangled beyond repair but i was able to obtain a decent used set of trim as well as a very nice original 70 front valence.
I'm becoming my own worst enemy by mentioning unique 70 only minutiae to them. Crud :bricks1:
