harmonic balancer
« on: February 19, 2007 - 07:26:15 PM »
I'm not sure I have the right harmonic balancer for my 440, I don't want to start it without knowing, anyone know what to look for or some way to tell if I have the right one?

Have you got a big rod engine or regular? Cast crank or steel? Internal or external balance? These are the critical questions if you didnt have the engine balanced.

I second that emotion.  If you don't know the answers to those questions, just tell us about the motor-what year, what transmission came behind it, etc.

its a 71' warranty block 440, not sure what crank is in it, it was redone at an engine shop but I don't beleive they did an internal balance on it,  and theres an 833 behind it.

It' gets a little confusing from here on for me. Lots more questions, and some you didnt answer

Where's the old balancer?
a big rod steel crank balancer for an hp will be external balance, so the balancer will have a small weight attached to it. The fly wheel is a bit different too if it's the external balanced big rod engine. You need to know what you have to install the correct balancer.
so first, you need to know if it's a big rod engine. All hp 440's in 71 had the big rods and was external balance.

What you need is obtainable and probably from a member, but you have to know what to ask for first.

I have a harmonic balancer on it, I'm just curious as to whether it is the right one, I don't want to tear my engine apart when I go to start it because I have the wrong one :pullinghair:

You will have to find out what's in it in order to balance it correctly.  You can't always go by the block date.  Any of the internal componets may have been changed.  These determine which converter balance you will need.

So where or how can I tell if I indeed have the correct weight or size etc?  I have no idea what kind of internals are in the motor because it was re-built by an engine shop and came with the car when we bought it 2 years ago.  It has a 6 bolt crank but other than that It is a mystery :dunno: :stomp:

You'll have to pull the pan and look at the crank and rods to figure out what you have.  If you don't know what you have post a pic.

Did the machine shop balance your engine? They should know something about it. Good luck
