I know there are some threads somewhere but I just can't seem to find them.  I am about to go to paint and need the information soon.  Thanks, David

Hamtrack registry on engineering drawings. The other spot is here under:    1970 Challenger - Questions About Bumblebee Stripe and Paint Blackouts

David:
I have been on vacation, but just returned and saw your post.  If you haven't already gotten it painted, you can have a look through my old thread (http://www.cuda-challenger.com/cc/index.php?topic=28698.0).  You will need to patiently look through the several topics I brought up, but there is some good information there.

Also, you might want to have a look at the article from 'Mopar Performance News' that Challenger6pak attached to this post: http://www.cuda-challenger.com/cc/index.php?topic=28832.msg290465#msg290465

I am getting mine painted this week, and I think I understand it now:

1)  The engineering drawing (on Barry's site) gives exact measurements, and shows how to locate the stripe, but nobody knows where the location dimensions are measured from.  But you can definitely see that the front stripe is 0.20", then a 0.25" gap, then the rear stripe extends to the rear of the panel.

2)  That article in 'Mopar Performance News' mentions that the total thickness (both stripes plus gap) is 5.70", measured at the edge of the trunk lid.  That article also mentions the same stripe thickness that is shown in the engineering drawing.  I am using that as a guide, and sort of 'eye-balling' how the stripe wraps around the quarter panel.

3)  The color is still confusing for me.  That MPN article mentions 'a satin finish, not gloss'.  But the consensus around here seems to be that gloss was used (mine will be black, so it is PPG 9000).  When most people paint them, they use a satin-type paint, similar to the decals on the B-body bumblebee stripes.

When you get yours taped out, let's compare notes!  Good luck.

Well, the bodyshop finally painted my bumblebee stripe tonight.  After a lot of research, frustration, and sorting through details, I think I got it right.

Any comments would be appreciated.

David: Did you get yours painted?

Looks good Tom.... Mine just left Monday for the shop. (Pics on my resto thread).  My painter isn't full time so it will be a while before I get it back.  He is aware of the specs and everything so maybe mine will look as good as yours.

Thank you for the kind words.

David:  My bodywork guy is also not full time, and he is primarily a Brand-X guy, and did not understand Mopars at all.  So it was up to me to tell him how to paint them (with the great help of the people here at C-C.com).

Most importantly:  Make sure your painter understands that the stripes do NOT come to the front of that bumper 'notch' at the bottom of the quarter panel (the recessed area).  Most painters want to bring the stripes down the quarter, and make them end at the front corner of that notch, which is incorrect.  (I hope that makes sense).  It takes some eye-balling, and re-taping until it looks 'right' to you.

Here are some better pictures of it painted.  It's a little difficult to tell, but the stripe actually angles slightly toward the rear of the car below the body line.  Most of the original paintjobs I saw did that, so we tried to replicate them.

I was a little concerned about how the glossy black would look next to the Organasol rear panel.  But I actually think it will look good, once the tail lights are chrome trim are on there.

You can see in the second picture that Goodmark has finally released the tail panel filler piece (it is on the floor behind the car).  Does anyone know if those were painted body color?  Or did cars with the black tail panel have them painted black?

I hope my experiences can benefit someone else who is wondering how to paint the BB stripe!

Thanks, guys.  I am anxious to get started building it up.

ROMI:  You got it.  Once I get it done, I will definitely be spending some Friday evenings on Gratiot.  Probably not this year, unless I can get some help pushing it!

I just got back from the Autorama show in Detroit.  There were some nice E-bodies down there, particularly a few Cudas.

David:  I'm looking forward to seeing your car when the paint is done.

I realize this is a very old thread, but I'm looking for specs on the bumblebee stripe, and since this site has changed, none of the photos are visible, especially those of the results that 70_CHALLENGER achieved.
Can anyone help?
Thanks
