Found another- value 72 barracuda
« on: February 21, 2007 - 09:53:11 AM »
I have found another close enough to go look at asking 8K. It a complete 72 318 all original with about 65K miles and starts and  runs well, but needs work. I asked for the vin. It has the build sheet intact still with the car. Here are a few pictures of the bad areas.

If I offered 6K, would that be to low? Not looking to low ball, but I am going to have to drop some dough to fix panel rust.

How's the frame?

In the pic of the pass. leaf spring I can't really make out if there is any rot on the frame near the front spring perch.

The whole car, especially the passenger side, needs to be carefully checked for rust/rot.  There may be a lot of hidden areas (frame, rockers, etc...) that need attension and rot repair.  That vinyl roof looks like it's bubbling under it.

I don't know about the 8K thing. I see major rust here. The front fenders look toast, at least on the passenger's side. So does the passenger's rear quarter panel. It looks like the rear window probably leaked, so the trunk might need replaced. As was asked by Super Blue 72, how is that frame looking?

Sorry, but he wouldn't get 8K out of me for that. Unless there is something more special about it then just a 1972. It runs is an awfully broad term.

If I were you, and considering this car, I would do the following;  Figure you can get the car for $7k, then figure very honesty what you think it would take to make the car what you want.  Then multiply that ammount by 1.5, and add it to the original $7k estimated purchase price.  If that ammount is more than you would be willing to pay for another 72 Barracuda in that finished condition, you should pass.

There are a lot of 72-74 Barracudas out there in very nice condition.    I would think you could get a really nice one for around $15k.  Could you make the car in question really nice with ony $8k to spend?

If you have some emotional attachment to this car (was your Dad's, etc...), then this argument is moot.

I haven't had a chance to go and look at it (going to on Friday or Saturday), but frame is supposed to be solid. The picture of the underside was just one he had, and was more related to the fact that the shocks and tires are needed to be replaced to pass inspection. Also the trunk is supposed to be solid as well. Roof wise I saw the bubbling, and had an e-mail to ask how wide spread that is, or if it is mainly in the location of the picture. So if their is rot only in body area, is it a good car to use as a project? Just rip off panels and have them fixed or replaced? Should I go 5K? I figure I am bondo free since car is still wearing original paint, will still check. If the underside of the car (floor, trunk, and framerails) is rust free with just a little surface rust here and there, would this be a good project to fix up if the price is right? Car supposedly starts and runs well, just may be rough on the outside.

Car was originally from Indiana, possible the body rust is due to salt during the winter?

JS29, I understand want you are saying. My problem is not many show up in my neck of the woods even in the shape seen below. If I do find one in pretty decent shape the asking price is up in the mid 20's. I am not going to jump the gun, but if its only panel work I figure a complete car inside and out is a good start.

I think $8,000. is kinda high for that much rust. I would wait & see what else comes along. It took me almost a year before I found my '73 for $6,000. with VERY little rust if any. Keep look'n you'll find one for less $$$ and less work! :2thumbs:

Where are you located?  This is a bit more than surface rust.

Is a 318 what you want or larger engine?  If not you have to look at an engine and possibly tranny as it might be a 904 tranny.  Add that to the bodywork also if you already haven't.  I think those '72s came with an 8 3/4 rear end so that'll be ok.

It doesn't say in your profile, where is your neck of the woods?

Here is an ad I found, this one is in Myrtle Beach SC and could probably be gotten for $17k.

Wow thats a big pic! I am located in The Woodlands, TX, a large suburb just north of Houston. I do plan to swap out the engine, but that will be down the road in 5 or 6 years. I was going to get the body work done up front, and over time on weekends redo the interior since the car runs. Then save up another 17K to put a Hemi and new tranny in. I am thinking based on the amount of feedback I may hold out for another 6 months and save up a little more to find one in the high teens low 20's in the shape you posted. Based on the feedback I am receiving for the past two cars I posted I will be better off. Plus I really want a 70, and if it doesn't sell their is a 70 GC 383 in Austin posted here in running shape that just needs a little TLC for an asking price of 22K.

As for the one posted below, I need to see before I buy. I could always fly out and drive back, but then theirs the wife to convince...  :nono:

Unless you know how to do a lot of sheetmetal work (i.e. welding, fitting), stay clear away.

You'll have $20k in labor alone w/that rust bucket.

This one's a better candidate:
