Just curious what you would pick
« on: February 23, 2007 - 06:19:07 PM »
It's getting about time to pick an engine for my Challenger. One will end up in my car the other will be turned into a cool coffee table.
Choice 1: 340
choice 2: 440

340 or 440 ? , Let see.. if you add 50 to the 340 you get 390. if you take off 50 on the 440 you get 390. Wait that's a Ford engine, that won't work.  :clueless:   Either engine would work for me....and having a nice spare around that's ok too...

I would build a nice 340 because of its better turning abilities and everybody has a 440. I would try to keep stock looks with nice top-end performance.

Well some 340's spank some big blocks. But the look of a 440 is....wow. If you want to ge fast in a straight line-440, if you wnat driving fun-340 (better on turns.) Both sound mean....440-6 pak or 340 six pack :2cents:

440ci but sell the 340, someone else can use it. They aren't exactly an over the counter engine. Go buy a 318 or blown block to make you house hold accessories out of, give someone else the pleasure at using the 340ci. It must be usable if it's an option for you to use it so why on earth you'd want to cut it up is beyond me mate. What ever option you take I'd sell the other engine or hold on to it for car use.....sick of seeing guys waste good parts and cars for trailers, couches & coffee tables. (unless the cars/parts are completely rooted).

 :iagree:

If you want a stoplight tire smoker, just want pure acceleration in a straight line, or want to sit around with your hood open to impress the natives, the 440 is it, but if you want to cruise down the highway with the wind in your hair and shoot through some winding roads, go with the 340. Just depends on which type of excitement you want. Course, you could just build the He** out of the 340, and get the best of both worlds. That's what I'm planning on doing.

The 340's are more scarce, so if I had one suitable for building I would, but with that being said ya could then sell me the 440 real cheap and make an old man a little happier, especially if it happened to be a 1971 date code. Where you located BTW ?

What ever engine I go with I'm only looking to build brute power. I like the tought of an aluminum headed 340 for a nice light weight package but a 440 with aluminum heads, intake and waterpump housing tips the scales 30 LBS over a fully ironed (heads and intake) small block. I'd never sell my 340 cuz it's been with me for 20+ years, besides Mopar performance sells over the counter 340 resto blocks for the resto crowd. :burnout:

I had the same option when I put my 70 Cuda together. I had a date correct 340 and a 1967 440 complete engines. I decided to go the 340 route for better handling and balance. Right now it was a great choice with plenty of power but I would of loved to have the 440 in there for the awsome torque and power they make. Either way I would build the engine for the power you are wanting them to make.

440.  And then give me the 340, instead of wasting it as a coffee table.

No, but I did think about it though. Personally, I like a 360 better than a 340, 340's are over-rated.
