Gas gauge / sending unit issues
« on: February 25, 2007 - 07:44:03 PM »
My gas gauge will only read like 3/4 full even though the tank is totally full, and it appears that the gauge is correct in actual gas used. You know, drive x amount of miles and the needle drops correspondingly. What's up with that? Is it a sending unit problem, a grounding problem, or what ?  Kind of nice to know exactly how much gas you do have in your gas tank, esp. when the sixpack is  sucking it down like there's no tomorrow.

I had a issue like this with my cuda and found the float arm was bent and not letting the sending unit show full when it was. I had to take the sending unit out and bend the float arm to get it right. It shows full now but this may or may not be your problem.

My original sending unit/gauge in my Challenger would never read above 3/4 tank.  When I replaced the tank and sending unit, I used a large gauge wire instead of the factory clamp for the ground and now the gauge reads full.

The battery in my camera just went dead, so I can try to get you a pic in a day or so.  It is nothing really special to look at, just a wire that goes from the tank to the body.

Okay, I was able to get a pic, but it is a little fuzzy.  I hope you can see it well enough.

Thanks for all the responses. Think I'll try the large gauge wire solution, see what happens. Gotta wait til it warms up enough to move the crap out of the garage so I can get to the Challenger, though.
