VIN tag restoration

OK, that is exactly why I asked. Seperating a VIN tag from the car is against Federal law. I bet that sending one across state lines is illegal as well?

You should check the applicable laws before you offer this service.

Do you have any supporting laws to back that up? If so, I would love to see them. You can read the federal laws and some of the state laws concering VIN numbers and VIN plates at this link;

I did not see anything in them that allows them to be removed from the vehicle legally.

I read the federal law you posted and believe the law is written to prosecute those who would remove the VIN plate for fraudulent reasons.  It says that the part can be removed by the owner or a repair person if necessary to effect repairs.  I would say that includes removing the plate to have it restamped/repaired/restored.  However, that is just my 

That said, is there some way he could legally produce a new VIN plate for his customers?  Perhaps if they provided a copy of the title with a signed affidavit from a recognized official (police officer, notary, etc.)?  Do you have any ideas/recommendations?  It seems a shame to have this service available to us and not be able to use it.

New VIN plates even if they show the original VIN of the car come under the "counterfit" VIN category.

The only legal way to have a VIN plate made is by the original manufacture - and only on new cars.

If the VIN tag is missing, the legal way to deal with it is to apply for a state issued VIN.

Would the state issued VIN # typically match the VIN # from the title etc..?
or would they give it a new number?

Both, at least on the ones I have seen. As an example, if your VIN was BH23C0B999999, the state issued VIN would likely have a state prefix, lets say WA for Washington state as an example. The State issued VIN would likely look like WABH23C0B999999

Going from memory here and each state can vary, so just use the above as a rough idea from old memories.

One oft he cars I had did have a Washington State vin tag issued on the A-pillar. Once the original VIN tag is gone- That's it.

It's unfortunate, but that's the way the law is. It would be nice if the orgianl manufacturer was able to reproduce the original VIN tags if they were officially licensed by the original manufacturer, with ALL proof in place. Title, bill of sale, first born kin, fender tag, cowl and rad support stamp, social security number, last known addresses, 3 previoous owners.....Certified by the company as a re-issued VIN, same numbers and all.

Make a kit and sell it so people can do it themselves.  I wouldn't want to send a VIN or even a Fender Tag off to have it restored.
