engine surging
« on: March 03, 2007 - 05:18:18 PM »
I recently bought a '71 Cuda with a 440.  It runs pretty good, but it feels like the engine is surging.  Where do I start trying to find what is causing this?

I notice it most driving down the highway, 45-65 mph.  It has a mild cam, so it never sounds smooth.  Some one told me it could be a vacuum leak, but I haven't found one yet. :clueless:

   :iagree:

When I first bought my car, it would feel like it had a miss at cruising speed. It was the vacuum advance biting me in the tail.  :stomp: Plug that port on the carb, and see what happens. I guess at this point, maybe my "miss" felt like your "surge"?  :dunno: I also wonder about a vacuum leak. Under the carb, under the intake?  :clueless:  How does it idle?

If it doesn't seem like the engine is stuttering/shaking my  :2cents: is maybe fuel related....when's the last time the filter was changed?

Instead of plugging the thing...the cam was changed. That means in all likelyhood the vacum level was altered too. If you remove the hose from the vaccum advance pod's nipple, and then stick a small allen wrench in it..Just small enough to go it the hole..not much smaller, you will feel it engage a screw inside the pod. Clockwise unloads the preload spring, counterclockwise adds preload. If you are surging at cruise, try adding 2 turns counterclockwise. Then reconnect the hose and test drive. I usually tool around and set it while on a drive. It has a reason for being there, and it will add a ton of fuel milage, and really help light throttle driving. Like inclines or hills on the road, etc.
