Door & Trunk Lock Cylinders
« on: March 05, 2007 - 01:46:14 PM »
I need to put a new set of door lock cylinders in my car because one of them is missing and I don't have the key to the other.  Do I have to remove the door handles to install these?  If so, what is the best way to remove the door handle?  Who sells the best quality door lock cylinders?  I am also needing to replace my trunk lock cylinder because the key was lost to it too.  I have removed the old lock cylinder and bought a new generic one from the parts store, but there is no way it would work.  The only places I have found these is year one and laysons.  Are there any other suppliers?

You do have to remove your door handles. Take off the door panel. You will need a long extension on your ratchet to reach the nut that holds it in place. There is a neat hole to reach this nut too. There are 2 linkages that will have to be taken off the door handle also. If you have small hands, or long skinny fingers, you might not have much trouble. The lock cylinder is just held into the door handle by a screw, I believe.

Yea my hands aren't that small.  I guess it's gonna be a P.I.T.A. for sure.  Is it easier to reach some of the stuff from the top of the door with the door glass down, or will all of it be accessable with the glass up?

A locksmith can make a key for your locks or I suppose change the tumblers in a lock to fit an existing key(they can for house/business locks anyway).

You did't mention the ignition being a problem.
You know the ignition key is what is used for the doors.

If you take your door panel off and have a look, you will see what needs to be done. If I can do it, anyone can. You have to reach everything from behind. The door latch rod, and the rod for the door lock, reside in plastic clips that you need to slip them out of. I believe the window down let access to them best. A confession here, getting the door handle out isn't the problem. It's putting it back in.  :bricks1: That's when you need small hands, or long skinny fingers. Those rods are a little tough to get back in to their clips.  :pullinghair: A long flat blade screwdriver helped me in the past.

Yea, I know.   I replaced the ignition lock cylinder when I was tracking down my ignition troubles.  Plus, my old ignition lock cylinder was hard to get the key in and out of.  I may end up buying the set from so that I have one key for the ignition and doors.  The passenger door lock cylinder works fine with the old key that I have.  When I first started working on the car, the driver's side door panel was taken off and kept, but the door handle, lock cylinder and dock lock knob were lost.  :crying:
