360 in a 318 car?
« on: March 12, 2007 - 06:33:35 PM »
Hello all,

I havent been on here in forever, or worked on my barracuda in about 3 years (decided to go sprint car racing for a little while). So the motor in my car (1973 318 Barracuda) has been apart for a long time after a piston knock developed after a night of drag racing. I really would like to just get a 360 LB and drop it in there... My question is, Will this be a major undertaking or do the 360's fit in there without alot of issues? Do i need different motor mounts, flywheel etc?   My fading Mopar memory remebers the 318 and 360 to be pretty close to the same motor, and i would like to hope it bolts right up to the trans the same etc. Any help would be amazing, i figured id show my face here again and ask the pro's before starting a long drawn out internet search.

Thanks everyone,

David

(And even though i havent been on here in years, the members rides still look jaw dropping!)

You can use the same motor mounts, but you'll need to make a spacer for the drivers side (ears on the block are in different spots).  Mine bolted right up to the same transmission.  Reused the pulleys and accessories without problem.  Could probably have used the same exhaust but I put headers on.  Oh, the flexplate is different.  Depending on how your 360 crank is balanced, you need a different flexplate than your 318 had.  Can't remember the rule, but 360 are balanced differently than 318's necessitating different flexplates.  I'm sure someone out there can fill in the blanks on that.

The only thing I couldn't reuse was the kickdown setup, but that's because I went from 2bbl to 4bbl.

To do the swap properly you need a different 360 left side engine mount
the trans will bolt up & yes you either need a balanced converter or flex plate or flywheel if it is a manual trans for the 360 as it is externally balanced unlike the the 318

:iagree:

I did this swap on my 71 Challenger.  I used the same mounts, but I had to have a few washers on the drivers side to take up the extra space.  If you have an auto, you can get the B&M flexplate for the 360 and you do not have to change anything on the torque converter or transmission.  I went with a 4bbl intake and had to modify the linkage to make it work, but it will work.  Also the exhaust will be the same.
