New 340 timing chain sloppy
« on: March 13, 2007 - 06:07:50 PM »
I'm rebuilding my 340 and the new timing chain has about a 1/2" of deflection. I replaced Cam and crank sprockets also. The 1/2" seems like a lot since it will stretch anyway over time. Solutions are needed. Could I go to a gear setup?

if the block has been align honed excessively the crank could be to high in the block & causing the loose chain , I have heard of short chains but not sure who has them , it could just be a bad chain also
gear drive is an option , you need to mic the distance between the cam & crank to get a properly fitted timing geare set

Chrycho is right, hell........I have put the same chain on three chev small blocks, and had tight to very loose. You should feel lucky you drive Mopar!

Could be the chain too, but 1/2" deflection, isn't really that uncommon, on the loose side.

Thanks guys,
I don't have the MFG in front of me but I will later. I'm sure this isn't the first time this has happened.

After a little research I also found a company called cloyes.com which may have a solution and some pretty neat products. Thanks for the lead on the tensioner from Mancini.

Cloyes is one of the best! I have seen the difference betweeen a Cloyes and a cheaper brand. Run a cloyes for 5000 miles and check the slack, run a cheaper set for 5000 miles and check the slack. BIG difference. :grinyes:

I put one on.  It's quite a simple unit.
