Need your opinion on the amount I should insure my Challenger
« on: March 14, 2007 - 11:16:03 AM »
I am planning on changing my insurance to Hagerty and I have to give them a Value.  The Challenger was originally a 318 auto, but it now has a modified 360.  I know the 318 versions are not super high, but with the rising prices of all E-bodies, I know it is worth something.

The car does not have any rust and has a very good paintjob.  I do know one of the rear fenders was replaced long before I go the car, but unless you are looking for it, you will never see it.  Otherwise it is a very solid car.

I am guessing it would be worth $15,000.  Does this sound like a reasonable amount or am I way off?

Jacksboys, I think youre closer to 20k.   :grinyes:

Just think of the time and $$ it would take for someone to build a car, get body work done, etc...

Plus, its a '71.

(Well, Im sort of partial to those)

Without seeing the interior, engine compartment, trunk, or underbody it is hard to give a good estimate. But if it were me and from your sig pic, I would probably insure it for $20,000. Insurance prices are usually higher then real world value, so keep that in mind. Also tally up your receipts and see how much money you have in it. Your best bet is to get it appraised by a professional. If there is an accident or its stolen, then the insurance company cant d1ck you around because you will have proof of what the car is worth.

I would go to NADA and get a value from there.

I just checked and it shows an average retail of 20k, and a range from 9k to 39k.

Don't under cut what you think it's worth or you'll pay for it later, literally.

I'm not sure exactly how the value of the car goes and how they accept it but definately better to go higher than lower to cover the differences in values and possiblity of continued work on the car which will increase it's value.  Also like 71bigblock mentioned think about the cost to repair it, etc.....

I was thinking of insuring my "lowly" '72 for atleast $20K.  I could be crazy but if they let me then I will.  :screwy:

I would look at what it would take to replace it. Don't cut yourself short. Hagerty is a great Ins Co. if you can say that. About 5 years ago comming back from a show in the Black Hills of South Dakota we got on 20 miles of seal coated road. The Challenger was on an open trailer at the time and got totally chiped up by rocks. Even the headlight were broken. Hagertys adjuster showed up at the body shop with me and the shop owner. He walked around my T/A and said what a shame, fax me the estament. It came to almost $5k to repaint it and in less that a week I had a check from Hagerty for the total amount. I cannot say enough good things about Hagerty!

As cheap as collector car insurance is I'd say go for maximum. I was told you can get 20k agreed value without an appraisal & to get an appraisal would only run $50-$100 around here.

You would be surprised, the difference between a 15K, and 20K policy isn't that much. I would go for 20K.

 :iagree:  Good point!

Plus that piece of paper is more useful than one would get from Galen Govier, IMO......  :misbehaving:  :poopoke:  :stirpot:

I have my 71 Chally insured for much more than $20,000 agreed upon value. And I don't pay a lot a year. Mines a 318 car. I just took it to my insurance adjuster and she takes pics of everything .

Up here , if you dont have an appraisal, you might get old book value...next to nothing.
