The ones that got away
« on: March 16, 2007 - 05:45:00 AM »
Hey everyone, newbie Bearcuda here. I was wondering what your biggest regret as far letting a particular car get away from you was. It doesn't have to be a Mopar. I'll be the first to admit that I am not bias as far as musclecars goes. It just so happens that my favorite ones ARE mopars. Here's the worst that I let get away (aside from having my 71 grand coupe that I sold- SO STUPID!!).
Back in 1993 I was living in Atlanta Ga. I was driving to a hobby store I had looked up and came across a classic car dealer. On the lot was a beautiful, blue 71 Cuda. It was a 340, 4 speed car that looked show car ready. I saw no rust anywhere on it. Asking price $5000. Now don't ask me why, but I guess because I had never bought a car from a dealership before, I didn't even consider the fact that I could have easily financed it. The only thing going through my mind was that I didn't have five thousand dollars. Heck, I barely had a hundred bucks in my checking account, but my credit was perfect back then and I could have snagged it. At least I took several pictures of it before driving away. The second one, my 71 grand coupe you can read about in my newbie intro.

We all have ones that we look back and wonder WTH was we thinking. About 10 years ago I ran across a 67 Coronet R/T with a 440 and a 4spd. The body was straight with all the trim intact but it did need some seat skins. After talking to the owner I found out he was needing money and was ready to sell cheap. He told me if I could get $800 to him in the next 48 hours he would hold the car. Wife was not happy with us spending money on an old car like this, so I let it go. I really regret this. Only one of a few I let slid thru my hands.

Ok, it's not a mopar, but a friend of mine needed money and would have let his '68 Shelby Mustang project go for $1200.   Lots of parts slipped by.  Bought a used original used shaker bubble from a guy who also had an NOS one in the box for $85 more, but I didn't have the cash.

I don't like to think of these things too much ... it makes me sad.  :'(

I don't know if it's the worst one for me but in 1975 I had a '69 Road runner. I just bought my first 4X4 so I figures I didn't need it any longer and sold it for $125.00. It was totally stock even with road wheels and all. Now you cannot buy the wheel centers for that. I just got a set of wheel lip moldings for my '68 that were $275.  :violin:

all the ones I sold thru the years....

Daytonas, Superbirds, HEMI Challenger RT/SE, 71 CUDA Conv,  plenty of Trans Am MOPARS, and on and on and on

...and a 71 CUDA, 440 6BBL, 4-spd....I tried to get the car purchased about 20 years ago....low mile, triple black, SHAKER....it had it all....sent the owner a deposit, made arrangements to get the car transported and the owner decided he didn't want to sell...had his mom call me and let me know he changed his mind.....sent my money back and that was that....

My first car was almost a '71 LS5 Chevelle. It was driving, but all original. Green with white stripes, 3.73 posi, rally wheels..$3500 in '86. I cheaped out and got my '71 Barracuda for $1500...lol.

My '71 340 rag top Cuda went for $7K in '91. To this day what my best friends call "the best car you ever did".

The one I miss the most, and am currently searching for a replacement...is a '71 4dr newport 383. I had to get rid of it because my land lord said she had a complaint, and that was the cheapest car I had in "the works".

I also passed on a '70 triple black hemi challenger shaker 4sp car in '92, with under 20K, from a little old lady's house near the muffler shop I worked at. A lady saw my '70 Cuda and the "Cuda 440+6" emblems, and said.."My friend's husban had a car like that. Black tho...". A friend got it for $9K.

Also, when I was 16 ('86)and had my 318, a local guy had a '71 44+6 cuda, shaker, 4sp dana plum crazy car. It was sold to a collector in CA...for $11K, and that was big money...lol.

I traded in the very 1st car I ever had, 72 Challenger, towards a Hyundai!  I was just starting college and needed something with A/C and better gas mileage.  The Hyundai actually turned out to be a pretty good car, it lasted for 10yrs without a single problem.  I always wonder what ever happened to the Challenger.  This was 1988, they only gave me $800 trade in for it.

Interesting about the Challenger traded for a Hundai.  I actually bought my 70 Challenger off the trade-in lot of a Hundai dealership.

In any case, I had a chance at an original Indian motorcycle (don't know the year) that was in boxes but all there when trading off a VW kit car.  Heck, I needed the $1000.  I also missed an original 70 Challenger passenger mirror for $70.  I thought it was outrageous at the time, oh well.

I've had several I should have kept.  A few I let get away are as follows.  A 1971 Barracuda convertible factory 383 magnum 4 speed.  I believe only 6 were made; A 1970 Sport Fury factory 440 6 pack 4 speed; A 1970 Hemi Road Runner for $1500.  A 70 R/T S/E for $1200.  The A/C was still cold in that one from the factory; A 300 G convertible that needed restored and many more.  At the time they weren't worth much.  The one I actually miss the most is a 73 Challenger rallye.  I had it for 18 years.  I raced it; got in trouble for "parking" in it and brought my new born daughter home from the hospital in it.  It is the only Challenger I will personally put more than 100,000 miles on.  I had to sell it to keep my house in a divorce.

I owned a 1970 Challenger RT 383 Slapstik B5 blue, black vinyl top, black bumble stripe back in the early 80's. Had it for 2 years and sold it. Yeah, it had some bondo that the previous owner put on it, but overall it was a pretty decent car. Fast, too. Sold it for about $ 500.00 :banghead:

Bear, let's see the pics of it then.

I don't have the pics on digital and they're kind of over 7,000 miles away from me right now. I'll post 'em when I get back to the states.
