Need identification help
« on: March 16, 2007 - 12:07:53 PM »
Hello,

I just picked up this "70" barracuda. I have a few concerns about it.  The title reads '70 Cuda which is based on the VIN plate on the dash which i have verified is a 70 barracuda.
My concern...
The front clip appears to be a 72 and so do the rear tailights.  The door plate and the plate on the inner fenderwell have been removed.  I'm not entirely convinced this is a 70.  I have a suspicion that it is a 72 and someone installed the dash pad out of a 70 which has the VIN on it.  Unfortunately the car changed hands a few times very quickly and most of the history is lost.

So...

Are there any other distinguishing features i could check on the frame or firewall maybe that would help celar up the mistery?

Thanks in advance...

  Joe

Ps here are a few shots of the car... click the pic to see more...

Welcome to cc.com!  I must say that there isn't too much on that car that says 1970.  1972 is a better guess I would think. I would bet that the tag on the dash doesn't match the body.  You need to check the other areas where the VIN is stamped (cowl, radiator area) and see what numbers does the body show?

OMG are those mirrors some kind of sick joke??

We'll get to the bottom of this puzzle for ya!!  Hope you enjoy the site!

Everything I see there says it's a 72 or older Cuda.

:iagree: Can't see the back of the console, '70 only had a hole for seatbelts, not an
ashtray. Those seats don't look like the ones in my '70 either.

sure looks like a 72/up  side markers, tail, grille, all newer stuff, doubt someone would go through all that - that had a 70/71

Thanks for the info...

Where else would i find the VIN on the car?  The dash one is proly wrong..  The one on the drivers door jamb is gone... and the plate on the fenderwell is gone too...

Yea the previous owners did some unsavory things to it.. not the least offensive is the Kragen special review mirror...  you should see the steering box...

On the radiator support it's located on the drivers side on the top lip or just a bit lower on the engine bay side. (Sometimes hidden by a decal) On the cowl it's located right in front of the driver but it's sometimes obscured by layers of paint.

In my opinion the car is a '73 because Basin Street Blue paint is most common on '73s. Also it looks like it might have had big bumpers that were moved in.
Can you post the first 7 letters and numbers of the VIN?  That might help us help you.

I might be wrong but I don't think I am

:iagree:  I agree with everyone so far.  Maybe had a dash swap in it's past somewhere.  Like the others have said, check the other areas to see if it matches the dash VIN.

Looks like a serious ex-racer.  The rear shocks are very interesting.  Never saw any like that before.  The AAR hood is very cool!

It does look like a fun car!  :burnout:

Check for the body numbers for sure, take photos of them and post them here if you can. If the car's body numbers do not match the dash VIN I can give you some legal advice on how to proceed.

If that is a 70 every distinguishable 70 characteristic has been changed to that of a 72-74 cuda. I would be very surprised if it turned out to be a 70 and not a 72-74.

So none of your numbers match between the dash, cowl, and rad support?

OK, so what you appear to have is a 1973 body with a radiator support that has been replaced. No big deal there, it happens.

But as far as the dash VIN goes, it came from another car and swapping one VIN number from one car to another is a federal crime.

You should try and get your money back if possible.

You should also contact your local law enforcement agency, tell them what is up. Their involvement will help insure that you get your money back from the seller. They can also check to see if the 1973 body was stolen. If the seller is the one that swapped the 1970 VIN onto the car the police will deffinately want to talk to him.

Please keep us posted as the events develop.
