Vinyl Top Trim Clips
« on: March 16, 2007 - 05:27:32 PM »
I'm putting a vinyl top on my 71 Challenger and need to confirm the type of trim clips that hold the trim along the quarters.  The clips in the attached pic are claimed to be for a 70 Challenger, are the 70-74 trim clips all the same?  Thanks.

http://www.totallyautoinc.com/ lists different kits for '70 vs later models. I have a '73
& there are a couple of the metal clips pictured above but most of them are rectangular plastic that slip over metal studs welded to the body.

I can get pics if you need.

Does anyone have a pic or an exploded diagram of how the vinyl top and trim are installed on a 71 Challenger?  Do the clips attach to a support rail that the trim them clips over, or do the plastic clips get screwed into the body and the tabs go right into the trim?  I got a kit from Totally Auto, but not sure how these mount up.  The tabs on the plastic clips seem rather flimsy to support the trim alone.  Thanks  :clueless:

On my '73 there is no support rail. There are several studs with flat tops bradded to the body that most of the plastic clips slide onto that the trim snaps onto. at the very ends a spring clip like in your 1st pic bolt in and can be accesed with the rear interior panels out, in the curve a different plastic clip is held in by an expanding piece of plastic that has a plastic pin inserted.

bullitt99....I follow some of what you said, but a pic would be worth a 1000.  Something tells me I don't have all the pieces of the puzzle here.  Thanks  :clueless:

bullitt99,
Thanks a bunch for the pics.  That really helps me out and I appreciate the time you took to get these pics.  I'll look at my clip kit, but it looks like I need to find the studs for the plastic clips to attach to.  Thanks again  :2thumbs:

For 1970, there were two types. The SE models used a wider trim, so the clips were wider as well.

For any year Challenger, Tom at R/T Specialties has what you need.

Troutstreamnm, the stud gun welders should have a tab kit available that matches the mounts needed for the vinyl top attaching points.  I know I am missing two on each side and I remember borrowing my neighbor's stud gun welder and seeing a small bag full of the tabs. :2thumbs:

You can see in this photo how the tabs go along the entire back portion of the car, near the rear window channel, and the sides use an insert style tab to retain the trim.

Yep, I've got to drill out the body putty from my holes since the car originally did not have vinyl.  Thanks for the info on the studs and the pic
