I feel he became a victim of his own success. He became "the guy" early on, however he seems to become entitled and acts as such. Subsequently he has become despised by many just due to his attitude. Factor in his business ethics and it is a disaster. On top of all of that, he has been very wrong on several very high end restorations which got some attention in addition to there now being a variety of people in the hobby that can do exactly the same thing faster and for less money. GG tried to make his name worth more than his service; unfortunately the hobby hasn't really wrapped their arms around this aspect. The investor types have gravitated to him because they don't know anything about the cars and need someone who will give them a sense of comfort that what they are buying is correct and worth the money. Unfortunately, this is a double edged sword as if you are going to present yourself as an authority and that your "word" is the basis of a big buy, then you may be held accountable if you are wrong. This has happened to him at least twice and I believe he had some legal issues as a result. He is on record as saying that a broadcast sheet cannot be replicated; we know this to be wrong and if I knew him personally I would have told him that if $100 bills can be counterfeited a broadcast sheet should not be impossible (which it evidentially isn't).

My limited interaction with him is that he is very impressed with himself, but I would not let him within 10' of any car I own. Subsequently if I was looking to buy a high end car, his word would be of very little value. I would do my own research and/or perhaps find second and perhaps third sources depending on the possible expenditure.

If not GG then who?  Dave Wise maybe? I really like his website http://mmcdetroit.com/ and have found it to be very helpful.

There are a few minor issues but overall his little white books might be his single greatest contribution to the little guys in the hobby...

The all time classic was when a thread like this was running over on Moparts & he signed up planning to defend himself... He stated something about flushing the toilet... First he got hit with dozens of members stating dates contact was made & funds exchanged & how long since nothing had been done... Then the coup de grâce: a Mod came along & changed his title to "Tye D Bowl Man"..... :roflsmiley:

Its funny you bring this up because I was just thinking about that same thread. I just happen to be visiting that site when he jumped on there demanding to know the real identity of one of the members who was or had slagged him. Man that went violent quickly!

I think his books are fine and agree that they were a great contribution to the hobby. I believe that at one time he was probably an ok guy who was like most if not all of us a die hard Mopar fan and wanted to do something for the hobby that began to turn into a career. Unfortunately he let his notoriety go to his head and he became larger than life. He forgot where he came from and became a legend in his own mind. I am quite sure he felt he was infallible and that he was the only one who could do what he was doing or had the knowledge he supposedly had. Turned out, both were wrong.

I agree, he started with good intentions & a real passion for the hobby, unfortunately he got caught up in the hype & forgot who the hobbyists are & why they matter...

His ego got as big as his fat azz!
Around 10 years ago I was at a show parked next to a nice '69 Daytona.  The guy mentioned to me that his master cylinder was going bad.  I told him I had a correct NOS one I'd sell him, but the one on his car was wrong.  He got all irate at me and yelled "Galen certified my car, he would have told me if the master cylinder was wrong!!!!!"  I told him on a 440 car the lines exited toward the engine, not toward the fender.  I had the right part he needed.  He wasn't convinced.
At the time, Galen was writing a column in MCG, and several months after the show, Galen mentioned in his column that a client called him recently saying he had the wrong master cylinder on his car.  Galen said in his column, that he told the guy if anyone says something like that, to tell them Galen has inspected this car and said it was correct and therefore it is correct!
I'm sure he was talking about the guy with the Daytona and me.  What an arrogant idiot.
Wedge disc brake B bodies from 68-70 had a master cylinder with lines exiting toward the engine, casting number 2226821.  I'm sure Galen knew that, but his big fat ego wouldn't allow him to admit he'd missed that on the Daytona and made a mistake. ::)

I always liked Galen Govier, I used to register all my cars into his registry.
I just recently spoke with him at the MCACN show back in November, great conversation, I've got nothing bad to say about him. :2thumbs:

The first time I met Galen was around 1979. My friend just gave me a 69 hemi super bee that was on it's was to the junk yard. I contacted Galen and he gave information about how rare the Bee was and encouraged me to restore it back to the way it was. Fast forward to 2005 I seen him at a swap meet in Michigan and wanted to ask him if knew a way I could find out what dealer my car came from. He abruptly told me that I would never find out where it came from and didn't want to talk to me.
At that point I thought if it was the last thing I did I was going to find out where the car came from. I went home and scavenged through all of my parts and noticed a sticker on the windshield. It was a 1973 tax sticker from Carpentersville, Ill. I looked up where Carpentersville was and found it to be outside of Chicago. I wondered what the chances were that it was from Mr. Norms. I contacted Mr. Norms web site and they put me in contact with a guy with old information from Mr. Norms.
They had the original 2 page invoice for my car!! Fast forward again to 2012 or 2013. My car was in the Dodge display at the Woodward dream cruise. I had a binder of my restoration by my car and low & behold there was Galen looking through my book taking pictures. I went over to him and you would have thought he was my long lost brother. He asked my why I didn't let him know I had a Mr. Norms car! I did let him know it was because of him that I found the information . So I do give him credit for giving me the ambition to find the history of my car.

Just curious does anyone have a recent picture of him, I saw a guy snooping around my car and others taking pictures of fender tags etc. at the Dubuque Mopar show last August. I thought it was kind of strange unless they were doing research.  :clueless:
