1973 Barracuda Resto-Mod
« on: March 22, 2007 - 11:08:48 AM »
I'll start off with how i actually came across this car. Right after i turned 16 i got out of racing for a little bit, and wanted to find something old to restore and learn about body work, welding etc. I spent the summer driving around rochester ny looking for an old farm truck, a mid 50's chevy truck or something along those lines to dink around with and turn into something nice. I spotted an old blue chevy truck parked next to a barn about a mile from where i lived, swung in and to ask the owner if they were looking to sell it. The lady informed me that it was her friends car, had been sitting there for years and no one in their right mind would want to scrape all the bondo off of it. Then she promtly asked "are you looking for a project?" After i said yes we walked back to an old rickety barn with a few old trucks, and a 1973 Barracuda 318, partially taken apart where she started to do the body work. Flew home, grabbed two grand, flew back before she could change her mind, and that night i owned the car that i had posters off all over my room since i was about 12.

Two weeks later i drove by the house, the barn that the barracuda was in collapsed and burnt to the ground.... thank god i stopped by when i did.

Then 5 years later i was talking about the car at work, one guy i work with heard me talking about it and come to find out it was his girlfriend i bought the car from, aparently she is still kicking herself to this day.

The bodywork on the car is getting there, ive been messing around with it here and there since i got it, but finally with college being over in about a month this summer is going to be the big push to get it into color before winter comes again. It was orignally a metallic green color with seats and interior in a nice shade of puke green. The car has been stripped and will be sprayed in Dodge Viper Blue, a 360 crate will replace the tired 318, more of a resto mod.

the picture of the rocker with the bare metal spot was a giant rust hole... i was proud of my patch :)

Suspension...

Strange Rear End

Shock tower braces, Better springs, shocks, bushings, sway bars and tire/wheel combo so she can stick

Disc brake conversion in the rear and upgrade in caliper/rotor combo in the front

Body....

Shaved antenna (will use hidden XM system) and door handles (still iffy on the handles)

71? Bumpers so i can get rid of the hideous rubber pieces and move them closer to the body to tighten up the lines a little bit.

Interior...

Modern CD system, have original seats redone in black leather

Looking good! :2thumbs:  One alternative for trying to track down the earlier bumper brackets is to drill new holes in your '73 ones.  One of the members here, KTO did that on his father's 'Cuda and it turned out great.  Those earlier brackets can get pricey as most people with the later models go that route.  whatever you do, hang onto those filler pieces as a complete set in nice condition in case you ever decide to go back to factory specs. (they're expensive to piece together a set on eBay.)

Have you thought about a different hood?  I ask because you have a nice flat hood there and with everyone switching to Shakers, AARs and doublebump hoods yours really looks clean and different with the flat one. I think I'm going with a flat one next time

Nice Project!!  :2thumbs:

360 cuda, my plan was too keep the flat hood. It was in amazing shape when i stripped it and i really like the body lines of the car when there are no bumps in the hood.

Street challenged... that was my exact plan... great minds think alike :)

ill try to snap some more pics tonight.

I think not enough guys use the flat hoods. Less can be more.

 :iagree:

NO scoops, flares, spoilers, extra chrome, bling or other distracting junk would be so different in the current hobby/market.

I'm gonna do it with a glass front end, body colored grill and painted bumpers...someday in my spare time  :dunno:

don't get the POR15 on your skin because it doesn't come off with anything.

Id use rust bullet or something else over por-15!  I was never impressed with it.  Nice work, looks like a great project.  Sanding is the fun stuff, I almost dread doing it, but no choice!
