Old paint removal from door panels?
« on: March 22, 2007 - 12:32:36 PM »
Anyone got recommendations for removing old poor paint from door panels? What kind of stuff would be good to use and doesn't damage the plastic? I was thinking about acetone (paint will probably dissolve into that because it seems to be very poor quality and flaking off). Thanks in advance.

I don't see any problem with this. I hope it works. That would make this easy.  :grinyes: Hopefully you plan on a re-dye here?

Whatever you decide to try give the panel a good test on the backside before proceeding, I'd hate to see you have a melt down.....Wonder if the ole oven cleaner trick would be the ticket here?
If it's flaking off already try a pressure washer....don't ask where I got the idea... :eek4:

I agree with the pressure washer, but DON'T use oven cleaner. If that can kill aluminum, I think it would eat plastic, or at least, disfigure it.  :crying: No pressure here, but you get one chance to make it right.  Start with the mild, and work your way up.

Yeah, I'm going to redye them. Panels were originally burnt orange but the previous owner had them dyed to black with some cheap crappy paint which is flaking off. I'll try the acetone first on some hide spots and I'll try the pressure washer too if the acetone is too harsh.

Oven cleaner works great for removing paint from plastic models and other types of plastic without harming them.It may work on door panels also but I have not tried it so try a small area on the back first.Brake fluid is another idea.
