    Anyone see the show Muscle cars on Spike Tv about the 70 Superbird purchased by the EPA?
    They used the car to chase a Jumbo jet down the runnway on take off to collect pollution samples. The car was modified with a air shocks to lower the car, so that the jet wash would not get under it and flip the car over.
    They claim that there is a film of this, but it has not surfaced since it was shoot in 1972-73

    I saw it. I thought it was pretty awesome.. certainly a creative way to test emissions on a jet. Crazy engineers...

    That would've been a fun job to have blasting down an airstrip in a Superbird, until you find out you might have lung cancer from breathing in all the unburnt jet fuel!  :grinyes: 

    I wonder if that was a consideration back then?  I wonder if they had a special interior air filter for the driver?  :clueless:

    ......I had heard of the car, but the show was really interesting.....neat story


    ......many winged cars have very unusual stories to go along with them,


    ......Never thought about the quality of the air the Superbird driver was breathing, I was more worried about a passenger flushing a terd out the back of the jet :roflsmiley:

    I guess rolling up the windows would help both sitations to some extent.....  :faint:

    I saw that story also, Engineers are some crazy arse people with no common sense. I can picture them sitting around contemplating how they were going to accomplish this task of collecting the emissions for testing. Attach something to the plane - No we will follow it in one of them winged cars. Probably, some engineers excuse to get a Superbird - Crazy as a fox maybe.

    I'm an engineer and if it meant driving a superbird I'd suggest the same thing. Maybe we're not as crazy as you think.  :bigsmile:   :burnout:

    Your right.  I'm an engineer too, and if I could think of something to get me behind the wheel of a superbird, I would surely do it. :D

    i saw that recently on Sunday morning on Spike tv channel on muscle cars and horsepower, was really neat story, said it was the end of the major hp and muscle cars due to the EPA  :poopoke:

    Maybe after the EPA did several runs in the Superbird then they said, "Holy crap!  Now we know where the all the gas is being used up in the country!  On these darn high powered muscle cars!"

    And thus ends the muscle car era........  :smilielol:
