New Dodge Ram looks sooo good :worshippy :drool: So Cummins is the best diesel engine for the pick-up truck?



Well, Cummins has been around for many many years powering the "big" trucks that make this country survive.  They are probably the most used and most well known for this. Clessie Cummins introduced his first diesel engine into the marketplace in 1919.  He invented the mechanically actuated, fuel injector, he is also credited with the invention of the compression brake. (otherwise known as the jake brake) He is also known as the "father" of the truck engine. His model H engine designed for trucks, first hauled a 3 1/2 ton load from coast to coast for $11.38 of fuel in the middle of the depression and next setting the world endurance record for any vehicle, driving 14,600 miles around the indy 500 track. The truck averaged 43.4 mph at a cost of 1/2 a cent of fuel per mile and only one refuel was required at the 10,000 mile point.
   Something that is definately not widely known, is he enterd the first diesel powered car in the Indianapolis 500. In 1931 Cummins entered the Indianapolis 500 with a self-built (3,389 pound, 361 cubic-inch) four cylinder, three-valve, 85 horsepower, Model U marine diesel that he installed into Model A Duesenberg. The Cummins averaged 86 miles per hour and completed the race on 1 tank of fuel, without any pit stops!
  Didn't mean to get on such a spill, but I think this is just some info that could help in the selection process.    My dad and 2 of my uncles used their Dodge duallies pulling 3 car trailers, sometimes hauling up to 36,000 lbs cross country, and still managing better than 15 mpg.  I mean thousands and thousands of commercial trucks can't be wrong, and the pick up truck engines are built along the same principal as the big ones, so........  I vote Cummins!

The Cummins Design is a far better one then the lightweight V8 design of the PowerJoke & Maxi , it is more fuel efficient &  the internal parts are far heavier

It doesnt matter what you buy, it will leave you on the side of the road some time or another. I buy a new truck every year and a half and either Chevy, ford or dodge, what you have look for is  good service and a dealer that will stand behind warrenty issues.

P.S. I will never own anything else but the big three. (3/4 ton toyota...is just gay)

 & the toy is a LOT more $$ than the domestic is .... I can`t figure why anyone buys them

I never said I liked toyota, just said their new truck has some serious equipment backing it.  The new Chevy Silverado(2007) is a really nice truck, I test drove one a few months back, wasn't expecting much from GM but they really polished their Silverado up big time.  Ford needs to update is F150 :2cents: missing the boat I think.  I drove an F150 and a Silverado back to back that day and I actually liked the Silverado quite a bit more.  There was a time not so long ago I wouldn't dream of even looking at a silverado, :bigsmile:  But this new one I was really impressed with it. I haven't driven the Ram though...probably should to get comparison?

I went to a frend today and I saw a Dodge Ram 1500 year 2005 (I think) in my town...It was awesome!!! I was standing there for about half an hour and just :eek2: Americans really know how to make a car... :lol: After half an hour the owner came, he was Italian and all family were with him, they got in their truck and drove away...It was funny to see this big truck used as a family car :roflsmiley:

We ll the Toys I have driven were older ones & while the rumor is they are indestrucatble my experience has been opposite , the Toys always seem to have premature engine failures & have generally been very underpowered & scary to drive on the highway , I have seen a couple of toys scatter the enigne at around 100,000 miles , the newer products may have more power & reliability but I am not willing to pay more for an import that MAy have better reliability especially as my experience is has been opposite

I have seen many Dodges with the Cummins go 800,000 miles , while getting decent fuel milage along the way , why would I experiment with others

There is a rumor that Toyota Hilux pick-up is one of the most reliable trucks on the planet. It is in use all over the world in different countries for different things. Even the terrorists drive Hilux :clueless:

I also found a top gear video about Toyota Hilux... I don't like it btw. It looks soooo cheap and I don't believe that would survive all these crashes in real.
