Torsion Bar Disaster
« on: March 27, 2007 - 03:39:39 PM »
I was adjusting the torsion bars to adjust ride height and when i was turning on the drivers side and all of a sudden BOOM!!! the bolt flew almost the whole way out the bottom and the car just dropped !!! There are a series of about 7 threads that were wrapped around the bolt in like a spring fashion...the bolt is fine but what the hell just happened ??? what do I need to fix the problem ???
what a scare  :pullinghair: I guess better now that driving down the road  :burnout:

I cant even get a jack under the car to lift it up  :faint:

any help is greatly appreciated...

I hope you are ok not on the way to the hospital
The threads must have stripped / torn out of the adjuster nut in the control arm , you will need a new one & get a new bolt too
Never adjust them loaded , you need to remove the weight off thge car before adjusting them

American Muscle reproduces these so any of their distributors have them, most mopar suspension places have them, Mancini racing has them. Part # 35612 from American Muscle. Should be around $25 a pair.

Wow, I always wondered why it was strongly recommended to adjust the bars with the car on jackstands and now I know why. I would have never thought it would have the force to pull out that much thread. I am glad that you werent under the car when that happened and hope you dont have too much trouble fixing it.

When you put the new ones in lube the bolts up with a good high pressure grease so they dont bind and snap again.

The torsion bar adjuster nuts and bolts came in coarse and fine thread.  Which one is stronger or more durable?

Fine thread is always stronger than a coarse thread.
