Door Panel Painting

has anyone ever did this...I see car shows like Unique Whips spray paint them all the time!!! the look real nice....

Stroker .... I used SEM products and they worked great.  There's a post of mine on here that shows the panels.  I think it was earlier this month.

Same here but VIP Auto Parts, I think Plastikote?  It very closely resembled the blue of my panels.  Make sure you prep the panels, what ever product you use, according to thier directions.  Plastikote requires a plastic primer.

Take your time and do it the right way with the SEM products. I will PM you what Rev sent me, you will be happy with the results.

Okay, bringing this thread back.  Can a person paint/dye with the SEM products on any color panel?

For example, I have a white interior.  Can I paint/dye a black panel white?  Or dont it work that way?

Yes, it will work. It will take a few coats though. The whole trick to this door panel game is having a nice set of panels to begin with(no chalking). Then you can change them to whatever color suits you.

I just did my door panels with the SEM products. I used the SEM soap, followed by the degreaser which is nothing but Naptha. I also used a bonding agent and then the dye. They turned out totally AWESOME! Sorry, I don't have any pics, I know, it's lame without pics. Someone did have a detailed post on this subject with pictures and what products to use and where to get them. It was very informative!! Good luck. It's a great way to save on buying new panels.

Much better then buying new ones, the repops just don't meet up. Glad that they turned out nice, its well worth the time.

How durable are they once they are painted? Do you have to be very careful, or can they take some abuse? Is touchup possible if something happens, or does the whole panel need to be redone? I'm just wondering, because I'd like to change my interior from black to red.

I don't notice any problems. Since the door panels are plastic, the dye is flexible enough not to crack when putting the panel back on. Even if you manage to scrape it afterwards, taking the panel off any re-spraying it is easy enough.

I understand using the SEM products for cleaning & prep -- does anyone have any experience with the color coded "paints" (not sure they are dyes) from Year One for this type of project?
