v10 options
« on: March 31, 2007 - 04:28:15 PM »
I was just wondering what trannys fit behind the V10's found in the trucks.  Does it have the same SB pattern as everything else?

Its a toss up to me as far as getting a 5.7 hemi, or a V10 for my truck.  What are the pro's and cons of each also?  Thanks in advance

As far as I can remember the V10 has the same bolt pattern as the smallblock, but double check that with the other members.

The 5.7 would get better mileage, but the V10 would have a bunch more low-end torque.

The 5.7 might be easier to install because it is not as long.

What do you plan on using the truck for mainly?

jacksboys, It'll be used for a cruiser, with the occasional tow/haul.  And the more frequent stomp on the pedal   :burnout:

Another thing for me to think about is if a v10 will fit in my engine compartment.  But its got a ton of room, so I should be good to go there.

Thanks for the info, lets see if anyone else has something to say   :2thumbs:

Im leaning towards the 5.7, just to say I have a hemi, and for mileage, but man a v10 would have some wicked torque   :cooldancing:

To give you an idea of speed, my father had a V10 Ram 3500 dually 4x4 extended cab.  It weighed right at 7000 on the scales.  It did the 1/4 in 17.76 with the tranny shifting by itself and never spinning the motor past 4000 RPM.

I'd go with a 5.7...they have performance parts out for 5.7 now, V10's are kinda...not all that common and parts for them might be hard to come by later on down the road.  5.7 is much more practical and cheaper to do :2cents:

If your mostly towing with occasionaly just driving, then V10, although the diesel is a better choice.

If your mostly driving with an occasional tow, then 5.7 will be more enjoyable on the road.

What are you towing, 6500# worth of cabin cruiser or 3500# worth of car? The smaller engine would not be much fun during those tows if you have a large heavy load.

I don't think the V10 uses the smallblock bell, but I may be wrong.

Me? I would go with the V10, and high gears, with a over drive tranny. My V10, got better MPG than a 360, in a 3500 2x dually. And power?

Nothing compares.

Thanks for the input guys.  As far as what Im going to tow, probably a light 14 ft boat a couple times a summer, maybe my car once or twice, and a pickup camper once or twice, too.  Thats about it.  I think I'm set on a hemi.

Dimples, you almost maybe got me convinced, IF the bellhousing is the same pattern as a SB.  I dont even want to think about messing around trying to see if stuff fits.

So, for now, the plan is a 5.7.  Now if I can find someone who has done a similar swap before, that would be great.   :2thumbs:

You can always look for the 6.1s or whatever they are that is the 5.7 hemi architecture but the bigger displacement, higher performance version.  Of course it'll cost you more, but it might be a nice median between the two.   :dunno:

Ohh, then why mess with a complicated swap fora V10 or new Hemi. Just drop in a 440.

My truck has a 440 that is dead nuts reliable, pulls a load without breaking a sweat, and gets 16-18 mpg cruising the highway with a 6000# trailer.

But, my problem is, I wont be able to keep my foot out of the throttle.  A 5.7 would be better that way.  Also, I like to cruise in town and that means frequent stops.  440 no likey that.

Also, a BB hydraulic bell is mucho dinero, and hard to find.   :walkaway:

Thanks for the opinions, keep em coming   :2thumbs:

I am willing to bet the 440 would get better MPG, than the HEMI, AND, I would trust it more.

Or for that matter, occasionally towing a 14' boat, just use a 360.
