FAQ - Shaker Hood Conversion
« on: April 03, 2007 - 11:35:51 PM »

I am seriously thinking about spending a bit of coin on converting to a shaker hood set up. Problem is I'm not sure of ALL the parts needed to do this swap. No info after searching either. When looking at Harms, shakerhood.com etc etc it's easy to get confused as there seem to be about 50 support braces and hood pieces. Also, do these kits come with instructions & measurements? Where would I find the measurments of placing and cutting a flat hood?

As it's a popular hood that quite a few have changed to I was thinking about getting a lot of info here then putting it in the archives for others to use later. Anyone know of each part needed? Possibly list them?

I'm looking at buying a second hand flat hood and need to know what else to look for. Shakerhood.com have a complete kit but is that everything that is needed? I've heard Harms have the best under-hood braces etc.

Parts needed:

# Flat hood
# Shaker Base Plate
# Shaker Adaptor Ring & Air Cleaner
# Shaker Hot & Cold Air Doors
# Under-hood brace
# Hood trim ring
# Shaker grills
# Shaker bubble
# Bell crank
# Feet
# Flanging Tool
# Seals
# Cables

Please advise if there are any parts missing, even the smallest of parts. I would like this for me and others to be a 100% complete kit needed. If you don't know what a bell crank or any of the parts are just make sure you email and ask them if the above list (once compete) is all with the kit. Or, print it off and mark them off as you buy them.

What do you guys think about the shakerhood.com kits? Anyone have one or seen them in person?
They're $2,750 USD, add a flat hood in for around $300-$600, total price = $3,500 budget

Thanks,
Carl

I have used Ben Snobars stuff & Gene ??? from indiana , both kits worked well , the grilles were more worse in Genes kit & required a lot of flash to be removed
That kit doesn`t show the inside air door cable bu tit is in the picture , the only other thing missing is the air cleaner that I can see

Thanks Neil, I've heard more good than bad about Shakerhood. I've sent them an email asking basically what I did here, all parts included except a flat hood. I should know in the next few days.

Challengers had the Tri-star on the front of the hood, what do 'Cudas have, if anything?  :clueless:

On 71-74 Cudas, there is an emblem on the front left side of the hood. It is emblem #em27 on this website: http://jacksautoparts.com/catalog/emE.html.

Thanks Carl for a great thread idea!

Thanks ChallengeHer and thanks Autophile for the Kudos.
I do know the emblem you're talking about now, I was just thinking more of up front in the centre.

So, seems as though we have the full list. If anyone else would like to add any input, feel free.
Shakers are awesome hoods and as per below can go on any year.

Sorry, NZ I just realized I forgot about the Plymouth emblem on the 71-74's. All my Barracuda's were 70's. I remembered taking a shower , ran down here to post before I looked like a dumba$$. :bricks1:

I ordered the hood conversion portion from Harms. His has a 3rd piece which alleviates the use of the flanging tool making the end result nicer. I have not installed it as of yet, but going through his very thorough instructional pictures it seems to be really straight forward. Also it was recommended to use six pack performance's shaker assembly. The end cost will be a bit more then what you have listed, but I think the result will be a higher quality conversion.

I converted my 70 hood to a shaker for my Challenger and it turned out very good.. I can post detailed pics. Do yourself a favor and get the conversion kit from Harms. The end result and install is much cleaner because of the unique adapter ring he makes for the trim ring step-down. With most kit you have to "make" the 1/8 inch step down with a flanging tool (i.e crimpers) and it would be hard to get a good result. Scott (Harms) has adapter ring the make this a snap to do the end result it cleaner looking...

if you look under the member restoration projects for EvilTwin Challenger you can see my work..

p.s. I taught myself how to weld and do metal work while doing my challenger... so if you are good with a Mig it should be much easier for you.

Thanks for the help and input everyone. I'll definitely be getting a shaker hood.
Just depends if I find a 71 project with a hood already but either way, it will have one.  :woohoo:

Opinions on who's is "best" may vary, but a couple things I can assure you guys of with absalutely ZERO doubt and. Harms sells the most accurate (to factory OEM) Cuda hood conversion parts on the market at any price. We are also the ONLY company selling a correct Challenger hood under brace, all others sell you a Cuda style under brace (either installed in a hood or in kit form), the Cuda style under braces will never look factory correct for Challengers due to cosmetic differences. Those who don't notice the very obvious differences are likely unaware of what the differences are because the differences are very obvious.

BTW, the fiberglass hood shown above is the nicest fiberglass reproduction I've seen, however it does appear to have been modeled after a hood with a Cuda style under brace (maybe someone elses conversion was used for the mold?).

As someone already said, I reccomend SIx Pack Performance for the other parts needed, we are competitors and they are the highest priced I've seen, but they are stand up guys and make the most accurate under hood parts on the market (IMO),

Either way you go NAZ, thank you for your past business and good luck to you,

Cheers

I was looking at the kit on eBay but, eh, it looks like a cheap version, no?  :dunno:

I think if I can find myself a flat hood I'll go with Scotts pieces as I want the best finish possible.
Like I always say and always have, do it once, do it right. The end result will be much better.

So, Scott, If I have a flat hood, what parts do you stock from the list below?
For everything you don't stock I will go to Six Pack Performance.
Tim Banning said he has the base plate but I will need everything else.

# Flat hood
# Shaker Base Plate
# Shaker Adaptor Ring & Air Cleaner
# Shaker Hot & Cold Air Doors
# Under-hood brace
# Hood trim ring
# Shaker grills
# Shaker bubble
# Bell crank
# Feet
# Flanging Tool
# Seals
# Cables

Thanks, oh, and I recieved my torque boxes quick smart, thanks mate.

Here is a factory exploded view of what you'll need, I re-named most of the major items so that you could shop easier. Good move going to Six Pack on the rest, Art Pachecho is a good guy and he will take care of you.

Cheers!
