Gas tank brace
« on: April 04, 2007 - 04:23:25 PM »
Hi everyone.  I am getting ready to weld in my gas tank braces.  For the life of me I can't find where I wrote down how far they are supposed to be spaced from center to center.  And I also don't recall if they are spaced equally from the center line of the car.  If someone could help me out with some measurements I would really appreciate it.  Thanks!

I guess I'm not sure what we're talking about.  I don't think they were welded in unless the challenger is different?

I think that they are supposed to be welded in.  When I got my car my trunk was pretty much non-existent.  The braces are the two pieces that are circled in red.  They weld in underneath the trunk floor at approximately where the blue lines are located.  The gas tank is pressed up against them and the tank is held in place with two gas tank straps.

Maybe I'm not explaining what I need well enough.  Could someone please use a tape measure and measure the distance between their gas tank straps on their Challenger?

Looked again. Used my glasses this time.   :22yikes: Still 10". This is my trailer so I figured it may be off a little. Then I crawled under my orange car that has no tank in it now, and it was 9 7/8". So I would still go with 10".

I used my gas tank to line up those braces.   Think about it, if everyone tells you 10" but your new tank smehow has 11" grooves, it's not going to fit when it's time to put it in.   Use your new tank, strapped to the braces and straps to line everything up.

10" CL from brace to brace is what I have set every ebody trunk floor brace to and have had no problems with tank alignment. But if in doubt, do as Shelbydog wrote and double check tank fit.

Measure twice and cut once or is it measure once and cut twice...darn cut it three times and still too short. :2thumbs:

That is the story of my life

Shelbydogg has a good point though.  I am buying all my sheet metal as I go along though, I didn't plan on getting the tank till closer to the end of the resto.  I am sure today will be yet another day I reflect back upon and think, "damn, I should have done that differently!"  Thanks again everyone.

And if you have your tank strapped onto the braces, you can get the tank positioned front to back too.    Then no surprises later.
