How to "Smooth" a chrome bumper? any Advice?
« on: April 04, 2007 - 09:39:15 PM »
I have decide to smooth my stock bumpers and fill the bumper bolts before rechroming.. any advice on the best way to do this? Or should I just cut the head off the old bumper bolts, weld em in.... and smooth and rechrome?

Brent

I can`t see the nut going onto the bolt after having chromed , you may have to weld a tab onto the bumper to hold the bumper bolt inside the bumper

Hhmmm??? good point .. maybe the chrome shop can cover the bolts with something so they dont get chromed and are left alone. I might have to call...

I am going to smooth my rear bumper by just welding up the holes and then welding bolts on the inside of the bumper for the brackets.Grind everything smooth on the outside and rechrome or for mine paint body color.

well that is basically what I was going to do but didnt know if there was any little tricks to make the job easier or come out better..

a friend of mine told me that he heard you should somehowe brace the bolt on the back so you don't get a stress fracture and crack the chrome. Sounded kinda far-fetched to me... but I thought I would ask.

On Hot Rods in the past that my dad and I have done, we just weld studs in place of the stock bolts, grind everything smooth, and then have them replated. The platers can cover the studs so that the threads don't get chromed.

Better talk to your plater before welding on your bumper .We did my son's truck bumper that way .One place said we won't touch it. The other one wanted like $700 to $800 for plating just because they had to work 4 welded bolt holes and you did a nice job, he said  . I said no thanks ! If you are painting it I no problem . I cut the rounded head off, welded the square part in the hole ,ground smooth, then put a large washer on the back side and welded it solid .
