Best alternator?
« on: April 10, 2007 - 08:44:30 PM »
I have a 340 in my Challenger and I am replacing the alternator. Which one do you think is the best? I am not running a electric fuel pump or fans, no power windows or air. I have heard of some people run a GM alternator. Thanks

The Factory alt is the Best IMO all they ever need is a new set of brushes & the reg is seperate so you do not have to swap the alt if the reg fails

On the topic of Powermaster, I have seen poor quality control also (at least for the Mopar-style alternators). A friend of mine had to get 2 replacements before he got a good one. I have had better luck, no replacements needed, but I did have a small problem with a loose regulator. I love the one-wire hook-up, however.

That's kinda what I was looking for is the one wire and no external regulator, but if they are junk to begin with, I'll go with the factory one.

I bought a powermaster, drove it for a couple hundred mile and the windings shorted out. Called powermaster and they said they would repair it for free, couple days later they sent me a brand new one that has worked great so far. The powermaster looks too good and I get too many compliments for me to get rid of it. Alternators can easily be changed on the side of the road, so I carry a factory alternator just in case...

I have the Powermaster 75-amp (non-chrome, internal regulator) from Summit and it seems just fine.

Yup the 120a Mopar bolts right on and is a Denso model. You will have to make some accomodations for the connections but it is doable.

You may want to upgrade your wiring to accomodate the additional power. There are lots of threads on here regarding bypassing the amp gauge when running a higher amp alt.

I have an extra 120a alt if anyone is interested or you can pick them up on Ebay very cheap. $25 + shipping if anyone wants it

Generally, the brushes wear down, or the windings short out, but I'm glad you solved your problem. Those voltage regulators are alot cheaper, and easier to replace than an alternator.  :grinyes:
