steering play
« on: April 11, 2007 - 05:56:03 PM »
I have about 1/8 turn play in my steering wheel going down the road. Can I fix this by adjusting the worm gear(the nut/flat screw on the top of the gear box) or do I have to replace the box. I also seen some guys posting about replacing it with a box out of a cop car.

Yes you can, as to how much adjustment is left youll have to find out. NYS inspection is 3 inches of free play in manual steering boxes, try to get it around 1.25 inches, prevents binding things up in the steering box. Power steering is 2 inches, but less is better with those.

Might want to check the coupler between the steering shaft and the box, I've seen them wear out before and cause your symptoms.

if the coupler has ever been apart the "shoes" inside the couple could have been installed 90* out , this will cause a lot of play in the steering
