Best overall "mud" to use..
« on: April 13, 2007 - 07:00:08 AM »
As most of you are aware.. my cuda was taken down to bare metal.. and there's no rust, thankfully. I will be attending to most of the easier body work.. except the org shaker hood. It appears (because of 2 weld lines) that the hood must of popped open once while racing.. becasue there are waves in the metal.. so i'll need an expert to make it look "smooth" again.

However, the body has some dings here and there and some deep sand scratches. So my question is what is the best mud for workability and for durability?? Also, the original rear quater lips were pulled out slightly, so I have to perfect the contour as was done before I took it down to metal. I'm began to use a 7/16 gas hose wrapped with sandpaper to get the desired contour.. and other suggestions? or better suggestions? TIA

Rage (by Evercoat) is very good.  It is creamier than Bondo going on and sands easier. It is comparable to Bondo's Ultimate but cheaper.

For a very hard patch, I usually use a fiberglass re-enforced product (duraglass, everglass, etc).  For general filler work, I use Rage Xtreme by Evercoat.

Bondo works just fine for me...and at 13 bucks a gallon, price is right!

I've used various evercoat products with great success. Lately though I have been using USC Fuzion.

As usual, ask 20 people their opinion, and you'll get 20 different answers ... clear as 'mud'  ;D

I like to use Rage lightweight filler, very good stuff, sands easy, very little pinholes if you apply correctly

I really like the Evercoat Rage Gold and Xtreme.   The Xtreme is my fav out of the two because it is a little more fluid when spreading as well as it seems less prone to have pinholes.

I use USC, I can't see spending 2 times the amount when most of it ends up on the floors, all over the shop, and on me of course!  Anyway I look at it, the sanding sucks.

I use All Metal on seams (factory and my welded patches), then Platinum filler I think it's by Marson? SOmething like $25/gal, but sands like talcum powder..lol. Sands real nice. I also use roll bar padding sections and foam blocks to sand details like curves. I dont like hard "bucks" to wrap the paper around. You might as well be using your fingers at that point.

Hows about the wheel lip guys.. i'm using fuel line.. any other suggestions? The reason i have body work there is because the lip was pried up slightly to help w/ the N50's in the rear. This was done long ago, but still has the plier marks etc..

Another question would be how to handle the waves in the shaker hood. I may be willing to swap someone for a clean straight metal repo too.. who knows. It's og to the car so prob not.. just talkin as usual.
