So now a days, how hard is it to get one of these to work in a classic? I'm seriously thinking of putting one in my 71 Challenger vert with a 727 but the computer & electronics part scare me?

When i put that car together, there wasn't anything avalible,as far as the electronics go.I built my own based on the GM LS1 computer and sensors, but now FAST,AEM,and Mopar Performance all have off the shelf systems. There about 2500 bucks though.

Street and Performance out of Arkansas has a stand-alone wiring harness that uses the stock ECM.  Problem is, the harness runs about $900.  I called and asked if it was just a stripped down version of the stock one, and I didnt get a definite answer, Im sure they didnt want to tell me if it was.

Im gettting a 5.7 with either a 518 tranny, or a 5spd behind it for my '67 pickup.  Should haul the mail anyways.   :2thumbs:

Well I think spending $1000-$2000 on a JY 5.7L Hemi and another $1000-$2000 for new electronics to put it in a classic, add some minor cost upgrades and thats a dang good price for a Hemi!!!! That what I want to do now and then upgrade in the future to a 6.1.

Yeah,I would stay away from the factory computers and redone factory harnesses, they just don't respond well to cams etc,I got the 5.7 in that Cuda for 800 bucks with no assesories out of a junk yard, and built my engine management for less then a grand.Deals are out there you just have to keep your eyes open

This was something I was kicking around at one time but chickened out and put in a 440. How much weight difference is there between a 440 and a 5.7 truck motor?

Man, thats gotta be a huge difference.  I think I read somewhere that the 5.7 weighs less than a 318!

Has anyone seen the  392" hemi from Mopar Performance?  I checked their site recently but I found no mention of it.  Any ideas on power, torque, price?

I plan on putting one in my car this fall. Here are the current stats on the motor and availability. It makes 525 hp injected and 550 with a carb. The current cost is $16,800 and there are only 4 currently in stock in dealerships. 1 is in Florida and 2 are at Henderick in Charlotte. You can always order it through any dealership as a direct ship part and it comes with the programmable ECM. I don't have the part number handy but that is the scoop.

I think for $16k I would go old school, 426 all the way. I'm planning on a new hemi because the prices are way lower!!!

I just picked up a 5.7 hemi with the tranny and transfer case from an 03 Ram 4X4 for $1700. I'm hoping to get some of my money back by selling the tranny and transfer case. The 5.7 will be replacing the old 392 that's in my Cuda right now. I plan on using the TF727 that's in the car now and TTI headers and motormount plates. I'm not sure if I'm going to try to stay with the factory fuel injection or go with a carb. If I go with a carb I don't have to deal with installing a high pressure fuel system or the drive by wire throttle and the only electronics would be the spark management system. I'm kind of an old school type of guy, and if I can get my hands on a carb intake manifold I will probably go that route. I'm definately looking forward to having more room in the engine bay and less weight over the frontend! There's almost a 300 lb. weight difference between the old 392 and the 5.7!

Hey Heminut, when I get a 5.7 for my project, I want EFI.  Let me know if you get rid of that stuff, I know where theres a 5.7 without any accessories I might pick up within the next couple months.   :2thumbs:

The way i understand it, the problems are accessory drives, and electronics. The factory serp system is not as easy to stick in an old car if you dont have AC and stuff. The Crate engines have that part covered. Plus, the PCM is intertwined with gages and body wiring. And if those are not dealt with, the pcm can't figure out how to function. So the MP with it's own harness and PCM is IMO the best bet. It'sa factory new (production line) engine, not anything that was done by low-bidders. So I would think they are decent crate engines. I have not done any swaps with them yet. SO I'm no authority. But this is what I've read from various sources. It's just more to overcome really than anything else. If they just dropped in it would be too easy...
