Grinding on 4-speed
« on: April 16, 2007 - 11:08:26 AM »
I'm getting this second hand but I'll relay it as best I can. My wife was driving the car the other day and when she pushed the clutch in she heard/felt a grind noise. But when the clutch was out and in gear and driving normally there was no sound. Does this sound like a throwout bearing? Don't think it would be the pilot bearing I think that 'disengages' when you push the clutch in, am I right on that? What are your thoughts?

Thanks

:iagree: I sounds like a throwout bearing.  The pilot bearing is always "engaged" though, since the input shaft rides in it.

Maybe she was shifting into reverse and the shaft was still spinning a little bit. You have to try it for yourself and see if there is anything REALLY wrong with it.

Could be a throwout bearing... The bearing should not be touching any rotating assemblies when the clutch disc is engaged to the flywheel/pressure plate (pedal is released). If the clutch is maladjusted, the bearing can ride against the pressure plate fingers, causing the bearing to spin at all times, and it will fail prematurely (very prematurely). Also keep in mind that maladjustment can cause the pressure plate fingers to contact the disc at full disengagement. In other words, if the throwout bearing gets pushed too far, it can cause some very nasty, noisy interference.
